The Art of Matt Wagner's Grendel
(Ref: AOMWG)

The Art of Matt Wagner's Grendel
Edited by Matt Wagner & Diana Schutz. Dark Horse Books, 2007. Over twenty-five years, what began as the story of Hunter Rose, the talented young author who became the city's most feared assassin and criminal overlord, evolved into a prolonged examination of authority, society, and that dark mechanism of nature - violence. Now, take a step inside one of the most daring projects ever created, as Matt Wagner guides you through the artwork that changed contemporary comics forever.

Many artists have lent their vision to the seductive mystery that is Grendel, and this handsome hardcover volume contains rare and never-before-seen work-including production sketches and designs-by Tim Sale, Teddy Kristiansen, John K. Snyder III, Edvin Biukovic, and more! Also features a gallery of guest artists, with pinups by Frank Miller, Paul Pope, Dave Johnson, Tony Harris, and more! Celebrating twenty-five years of Hell! 208 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (229mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9781593077891)

(Ref: AOOT)

Art Out Of Time: Unknown Comics Visionaries, 1900-1969
Dan Nadel. Abrams/ Harry N. Abrams, 2006. Before the Underground Comix movement of the late 1960s there was no room for eccentric talent it seemed. Dan Nadel unearths these forgotten talents in five sections: Exercises In Exploration, Slapstick, Acts Of Drawing, Words In Pictures, and Form In Style.

Among the twenty-nine artists featured are such creatives as Bob Powell, Ogden Whitney, Milt Gross, Charles M. Payne, Jefferson Machamer, Rory Hayes, Boody Rogers, Charles Forbell, Gustave Verbeek, Gene Deitch & George Carlson. Many of these will be unfamiliar. No matter, their art is as joyous, inquisitive, exploratory & inventive as the day it was created.

The book comes with a brief introduction and artist biographies at the rear. For those with an interest in the obscure, arcane & eccentric in illustrated art, Dan Nadel's book will provide endless amusement and inspiration. 320 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 8" x 11" (20cm x 28cm) Dust Jacket ISBN: 0810958384 Highly Recommended.

Arf Museum (Arf #2)
(Ref: ARF2)

Arf Museum (Arf #2)
Craig Yoe. Fantagraphics, 2005. Continuing this fascinating new series with further explorations of the sometimes bizarre and twisted links that exist between the world of fine art and comics. The subtitle gives away the focus of the series “The unholy marriage of art + comics”. The series intends to explore lesser know masterpieces of comics art from mainstream figures of the art world such as Cruikshank, Dali and Picasso.

Highlights include The Yellow Kid and a look at tattooed women. Not to be outdone there is a tattooed man in a '50's Marvel reprint featuring art by the underrated and somewhat bizarrely styled Fred Kida. There's even a Mort Walker strip on what happened when “art thief” Roy Lichtenstein met the cartoonists he borrowed from. Oh and Giant Apes. You can't go far wrong with Giant Apes, as they knew very well over at Lexington Avenue in the DC Comics offices. 120 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (229mm x 305mm) ISBN: 1560977329 and ISBN-13: 9781560977322 Highly Recommended.

Arf Forum (Arf #3)
(Ref: ARF3)

Arf Forum (Arf #3)
Craig Yoe (Editor). Fantagraphics, 2007. The third volume of the popular "Arf" series, Arf Forum runs the gamut from Krazy Kat's kartoonist George Herriman to heartbreak rocker Elvis, Spider-Man's Stan Lee to New Yorker cartoonist Otto Soglow, Little Nemo's Winsor McCay to silent film star Charlie Chaplin, Nancy's Ernie Bushmiller to Surrealist Max Ernst. The sexy pin-up cover on Arf Forum highlights a feature on historical images of people reading comics: from a young Elvis reading Betty and Veronica on his first tour to a boxer-clad Rock Hudson reading the Sunday funnies.

Also ratcheting up the titillation factor is a spread on the sexy cartoons of Italian artist, Kremos. The Arf books have a special fondness for cartoonists doing wacky and surrealistic comics. This Arf features a generous sample of Bill Holman's Smokey Stover, including unpublished rarities. Also in this volume, macabre cartoonist Henry Heath goes devilish in the ongoing "Cartoonists Go To Hell" series. A bona fide super-hero swoops into the pages of Arf when "Captain Marvel Fights The Surrealist Imp" in a classic tale from the Golden Age of Comics.

Meanwhile, real-life superhero Stan Lee introduces a section devoted to, in Lee's own words, Yoe's own "wacky, weird, wild comics that become Art with a capital 'A'!" And finally, "Yabba Dabba Been Done" examines the caveman and dinosaur cartoons of masters T.S. Sullivant, Winsor McCay and Frederick Opper — all pre-Fred and Wilma Flintstone! 120 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (229mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9781560978329)
