The Adventures of Tintin at Sea
(Ref: AOTAS)

The Adventures of Tintin at Sea
Yves Horeau edited and translated by Michael Farr. John Murray, 2004. Published in conjunction with the exhibition held at the National Maritime Museum in Grenwhich in 2004 this book is devoted to all things nautical that occurred in Tintin's worldwide adventures. The exhibition marked the 75th anniversary of Hergé's creation.

Although Tintin's adventures were fanciful creations, Hergé made certain that the settings were realistic. This book shows exactly how much research was done for Tintin's adventures on the High Seas, which included The Crab with the Golden Claws (where in he first meets Captain Haddock) The Shooting Star, The Secret of the Unicorn and its sequel Red Rackham's Treasure.

The author has assembled a fascinating collection of photographs, maps, diagrams and sketches together with relevant examples from the stories. Great fun for the casual fan and Tintin completists alike. 58 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (225mm x 300mm) ISBN: 0719561191

Our Price: £15.00 ($24.00) (€16,50)

The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 1
(Ref: AOHIOT1)

The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 1
Philippe Goddin, Hergé. Last Gasp, 2008. The first in a three-volume series, The Art of Herge presents a selection of Herge's outstanding, often unpublished, drawings showing the diversity of his work and offering the reader a view of the range of his talent.

Georges Remi, better known as Hergé, the creator of Tintin & Snowy, was born a century ago. He left us an exceptional legacy, at the center of which was Tintin, but also included much other work. From generation to generation the popularity of his creation has carried on and been extended, to such a degree that whatever their age, many readers feel they have grown up with Tintin.

This first volume of The Art of Herge covers the years 1907 to 1937, during which the range of Herge's drawing is evident: his childhood and schoolboy sketches, the first published drawings, his burgeoning work as an illustrator and graphic designer, the advertisements, occasional paintings and, of course, the comics for which he became famous. One witnesses his development as a young and successful artist with the promise of further achievements to come.

From his childhood onwards, we can judge the range of his talent from the vast number of drawings Herge produced. The prolific output of the master of the "clear line" included advertisements, comic strips, illustrations, fashion designs and caricatures. In this series, Herge's work is presented in chronological order, with many high-quality reproductions of the art. The artwork is accompanied by concise commentary, allowing us a closer look into the artist's daily routine and output. 208 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (225mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9780867197068)

The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 2
(Ref: AOHIOT2)

The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 2
Philippe Goddin, Hergé. Last Gasp, 2009. The second in a three-volume series, this is a selection of Herge's outstanding and often unpublished drawings, showing the diversity of his work and offering the reader a view of the range of his talent. Georges Remi, better known as Herge, the creator of Tintin & Snowy, was born a century ago. He left an exceptional legacy, the center of which was Tintin, but also included much other work.

This second volume of The Art of Herge covers the years 1937 to 1945. The period illustrated is fascinating on a number of counts, marking the maturity of Herge, the creator and artist. In 1937 Herge was only 30, but he had already laid down enough markers to lay claim to his future territory -- the strip cartoon. It was during this period that he began to render the Adventures of Tintin in color. The period covered in this volume was also marked by global political tensions and mounting dangers that boiled over into the Second World War.

From his childhood onward, Herge produced a vast number of drawings. The Art of Herge, Inventor of Tintin presents them all in chronological order, with many high quality reproductions, each accompanied by concise commentary allowing us a closer look into Herge's daily routine, and by extension, his thoughts. 208 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (225mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9780867197242)

The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics
(Ref: AOHK)

The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics
Denis Kitchen and Paul Buhle, Harvey Kurtzman (artist). Abrams, 2009. Harvey Kurtzman discovered Robert Crumb and gave Gloria Steinem her first job in publishing when he hired her as his assistant. Terry Gilliam also started at his side, met an unknown John Cleese in the process, and the genesis of Monty Python was formed. Art Spiegelman has stated on record that he owes his career to him. And he's one of Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner's favorite artists.

Harvey Kurtzman had a Midas touch for talent, but was himself an astonishingly talented and influential artist, writer, editor, and satirist. The creator of MAD and Playboy's "Little Annie Fanny" was called "One of the most important figures in postwar America" by the New York Times. Kurtzman's groundbreaking "realistic" war comics of the early 1950s and various satirical publications (MAD, Trump, Humbug, and Help!) had an immense impact on popular culture, inspiring a generation of underground cartoonists. Without Kurtzman, it's unlikely we'd have had Airplane, SNL, or National Lampoon.

This definitive volume is the first and only authorized celebration of this "Master of American Comics" and includes hundreds of never-before-seen illustrations, paintings, pencil sketches, newly discovered lost E.C. Comics layouts, color compositions, illustrated correspondence, and vintage photos from the rich Kurtzman archives. 256 pages. Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix
(Ref: UCTT)

Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix
James Danky and Denis Kitchen. Abrams ComicArts, 2009. The impact of American underground comix is profound: They galvanized artists both domestically and abroad; they forever changed the economics of comic book publishing; and they influenced generations of cartoonists, including their predecessors. While the works of Robert Crumb and Art Spiegelman are well-known via the New Yorker, Maus, and retrospective collections, the art of their contemporaries such as Gilbert Shelton, Trina Robbins, Justin Green, Kim Deitch, S. Clay Wilson, and many other seminal cartoonists who came of age in the 1960s is considerably less known.

Underground Classics provides the first serious survey of underground comix as art, turning the spotlight on these influential and largely underappreciated artists. Essays from curators James Danky and Denis Kitchen, alongside essays by Paul Buhle, Patrick Rosenkranz, Jay Lynch, and Trina Robbins, offer a thorough reflection and appraisal of the underground movement. Over 125 original drawings, paintings, sculptures, and artifacts are featured, loaned from private collections and the artists themselves, making Underground Classics indispensable for the serious minded comics fan and for the casual reader alike. 144 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (230mm x 310mm) (ISBN-13: 9780810905986)
