The Gremlins: The Lost Walt Disney Production
(Ref: TGTLWOWD)

The Gremlins: The Lost Walt Disney Production
Flight Lieutenant Roald Dahl. Dark Horse, 2006. Gremlins where mythical creatures supposedly responsible for all the things that go wrong with an aircraft who first came to our attention during World War II; a sort of cautionary tale to encourage preventive maintenance if you will. World-renowned children's author, Roald Dahl (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach et al) then serving in the RAF created a charming story about these creatures.

Just six inches tall, with horns growing from their heads they have a knack for sawing, unbolting and drilling our precious aircraft. The notion was so popular that it was picked up by Walt Disney who wanted to make an animated feature film. However time and resources being what they were during the war, the project was never completed.

This is the FIRST time since 1943 that Dahl's charming tale has been reprinted and is an exact replica digitally restored and reproduced. More than 50 colour and black and white illustrations. 56 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour ISBN: 1593074964 and ISBN-13: 9781593074968

The Pirates and The Mouse: Disney's War Against the Counterculture
(Ref: PATM)

The Pirates and The Mouse: Disney's War Against the Counterculture
Bob Levin. Fantagraphics Books, 2003. In 1963, The San Francisco Chronicle made 21-year-old Dan O'Neill the youngest syndicated cartoonist in American newspaper history. As O'Neill delved deeper into the emerging counterculture, his strip, Odd Bodkins, became stranger and stranger and more and more provocative, until the papers in the syndicate dropped it and the Chronicle let him go. The lesson that O'Neill drew from this was that what America most needed was the destruction of Walt Disney.

O'Neill assembled a band of rogue cartoonists, called the Air Pirates after a group of villains who had bedeviled Mickey Mouse in comic books and cartoons. They lived communally in a San Francisco warehouse owned by Francis Ford Coppola and put out a comic book, Air Pirates Funnies, that featured Disney characters participating in very un-Disneylike behavior, provoking a mammoth lawsuit for copyright and trademark infringements and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.

Disney was represented by one of San Francisco's top corporate law firms and the Pirates by the cream of the counterculture bar. The lawsuit raged for 10 years, from the trial court to the U.S. Supreme Court and back again. The novelist and essayist Bob Levin recounts this rollicking saga with humor, wit, intelligence, and skill, bringing alive the times, the issues, the absurdities, the personalities, the changes wrought within them and us all. 266 pages.
