The Black Order Brigade
Enki Bilal and Pierre Christin. Not unlike contemporary political situations in which terrorism leads to counter-terrorism in a vicious circle, this book illuminates the tragedy and monstrosity of violent vengeance on a human scale. The novel takes as its starting point the ultimately pointless struggles of left-and right-wing militants in Spain in 1938. Never having forgotten their defeat, a terrorist faction returns to the village of Nieves and massacres its inhabitants as the story opens forty years later. Enraged by the minor coverage given the slaughter, the journalist Jefferson Pritchard regroups his brigade and resolves to wipe out their old foes from the Black Order. As one crusty old group pursues the other across Europe, the distinctions between principles, between left and right, all but vanish into a senseless haze, without victors or vanquished, leaving only victims. Hard Cover Full Colour

The Chaos Effect
(Ref: CE)

The Chaos Effect
Enki Bilal and Pierre Christin. Humanoids/DC Comics, 2005. A wonderful collection consisting of two of Bilal's most famous works The Black Order Brigade (aka Ranks of the Black Order) and The Hunting Party. Christin collaborated with Bilal previously on Townscapes. The first story concerns a group of retired soldiers who must band together again when a ruthless group of fascists from the Spanish civil war start a campaign of terror.

The second story concerns a disparate group of men from various parts of Eastern Europe who come together for a hunt and begin reminiscing about their histories, but soon find themselves involved in more murder and political intrigue.

These classic stories of Cold War politics and European terrorism have been translated into fifteen languages, an essential part of anyone's graphic novel library. 168 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 7" x 10" (178mm x 254mm) ISBN: 140120631X Highly Recommended.

The Cruise Of Lost Souls
Enki Bilal and Pierre Christin. Humanoids Publishing, 2001. It starts with a meeting of political types discussing an agent provocateur they'd like dealt with. It moves on to include a flying village and it ends with a victory for whom? I can't even begin to imagine why the military types evolve into literal 'frogmen' during the course of the fable. Does anyone have Christin's telephone number? Once again Bilal's art masterfully evokes the commonplace in an absurdist allegory. 56 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12½" (23cm x 32cm)

The Hunting Party
CONTAINS ADULT MATERIAL. Enki Bilal and Pierre Christin. Catalan, February 1990. Out of print. Each of the East-bloc party loyalists gathered for a hunting weekend at an icy mountain retreat has a personal tale involving their mutual host, Vassily Chevchenko, a Communist Party patriarch whose career dates back to Lenin's time. As his guests reminisce, Chevchenko, his leonine countenance long frozen by paralysis, turns his thoughts to Vera Nikolayevna and a separate realm of memory, flesh and mortality unfolds. The sole unseasoned spirit in this worldly company is a young interpreter, both a witness to tales of unsavoury doings of his jaded comrades' past - invasions, purges, tortures, executions - and a duped participant in their present brutal, bloody game- a hunt from which he emerges with his own tawdry tale to tell. 86 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8½" x 11" (21cm x 28cm) £11.50 Save £1.50 Recommended.

Enki Bilal and Pierre Christin. Catalan, 1989. Out of Print. By the multiple award-winning artist, this European graphic novel is in English. The factories that are the lifeblood of the town are about to close, despite efforts by the striking workers.
