Gaines, who inherited a Comic book business after his father's untimely death. Father, Maxwell, had brought to the pages of the Comic books no less a character than Superman. How would his son fare? Well he introduced horror Comics to a large juvenile audience and eventually to an irate US Senate committee. Not content with that he also published MAD, from 1952, the idea of creative genius Harvey Kurtzman but taken over by Gaines' right hand man, Al Feldstein. MAD went on to become the most successful humour magazine of all time, with its idiot Kid Alfred E. Neuman as cover emblem. So read the whole fascinating story, warts and all, one the most enjoyable about anyone who ever worked in Comics. This uncommon 1st print US edition, with 16 B&W plates & original illustrated dust wrapper, although torn, is in presentable condition.

This copy has the additional bonus of a SIGNED humorous illustration, by fellow Mad-man Sergio Aragones, dated 1991. It features the artist himself & the publisher William M.
