The Comic Strip Art of Lyonel Feininger
(Ref: CSAOLF)

The Comic Strip Art of Lyonel Feininger
Lyonel Feininger. Fantagraphics Books, 2007. Lyonel Feininger is well regarded as a fine artist; however in the early days of his career he produced two marvellous comic strips that greatly advanced what was possible in the young medium. Working for the Chicago Sunday Tribune in 1906 he produced both The Kin-Der-Kids and Wee Willie Winkie's World. The Kin-Der-Kids were a bizarrely drawn group of oddly named individuals Strenuous Teddy, Piemouth and Mysterious Pete who featured in equally bizarre dreamlike adventures. Sort of The Dead-End Kids meets Little Nemo.

Wee Willie Winkie is similar to Dreams Of The Rarebit Fiend but has a much darker sometimes nightmarish tone suggesting that something stronger than cheese was consumed before bedtime. It allowed Feininger to let his imagination run wild.

This great new edition from Fantagraphics will hopefully introduce these strips to a larger audience that the might find out why comics historians speak as highly of Lyonel Feininger as they do George Herriman and Winsor McCay. 56 pages. Commanche Moon
(Ref: COMANCHEM)

Commanche Moon
Written and illustrated by Jack Jackson, introduction by T. R. Fehrenbach. Reed Press, 2003. Jack Jackson is one of the legendary figures that came out of the Couner Culture Underground Comix scene in the 1960s. Unlike his contemporaries he specialised in the detailed realism depicting stories from US history. Commanche Moon tells the true story of Naduah the "White Commanche".

Born Cynthia Ann Parker as a young child she was kidnapped by Commanches and raised as one of their own. She married a chief and gave birth to a son who became the last warrior chief of these people, Quanah. The backdrop is the constant warring of the native people's and the incoming settlers that raged across the plains of Texas until the 1870s.

Jackson does not flinch from depicting the atrocities committed by both sides. A powerful and moving tale that shows how well comics are suited to historical subjects. 128 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 7" x 10" (178mm x 254mm) (ISBN-13: 9781594290039)

Fredric Wertham M.D., foreword by Randolph S. Churchill. Rinehart, 1954. First Edition. Out of Print. Near Fine. Wertham is considered to be the McCarthy of comics and his campaign resulted in the demise of the highly regarded EC comics as well as many other Horror comic publishers, but as a result MAD magazine was created.

The classic study of the baleful infuence of comic books on kids that resulted in the inauguration of the Comics Code and fifty years of debate. This copy is in solid condition with a torn dust jacket (most extant copies do not have dust jackets or bibliographic notes). The EC Archives: Tales from the Crypt Volume 2
Stories by Al Feldstein, William Gaines and more, with art by Wally Wood, Joe Orlando, Jack Kamen, Reed Crandall and others.. Gemstone Publishing, 2007. The EC Archives continues with Tales From The Crypt Volume Two, collecting issues #23 to #28 of the legendary comics series originally published in 1951-2. Included are stories by Al Feldstein, William Gaines and more, with art by legendary illustrators Wally Wood, Joe Orlando, Graham Ingels, Jack Davis and others. Each volume also includes all of the original EC advertisements, editorial pieces and even letters pages, to give readers a true idea what made EC one of the most influential comic book lines ever created.

The EC Archives editions present these stories with all-new colours based on the originals, but utilizing new methods of shading and texture to enhance and improve each story's impact. The reproduction of these volumes is the best ever presented, as each of The EC Archives is shot directly from the original EC art! This volume includes an introduction by film director Joe Dante (The Howling, Gremlins, The Twilight Zone etc.)

Once unjustly maligned as a cause of escalating teen delinquency during the '50s, the EC Comics line — created by publisher William Gaines and a host of some of comics' most legendary artists — is now considered by scholars, fans, and collectors alike as a milestone achievement in graphic storytelling, years ahead of its time.

These comics entertained millions during their all-too-short runs and influenced some of our generation's most talented writers, filmmakers, and artists. They have inspired cartoons, movies, TV series, and countless parodies and tributes, and now these classics of the 20th century are set to return, presented in a stunning new format for the 21st century! 212 pages. The Fantastic World Of Claus Brusen
(Ref: FWOCB)

The Fantastic World Of Claus Brusen
Claus Brusen. Edition Brusen, 2006. Claus Brusen started painting in the mid 1970s and was influenced by Salvadore Dali and by artists found on rock album covers. He has also particularly mentioned Patrick Woodruff, who provides a foreword to this volume, and Victorian era painters such as Richard Dadd. In later years however he decided that he wanted to concentrate on what he has called the "everyday life" of fairies and other small creatures.

Doctor Who: The Flood
Scott Gray, Gareth Roberts, Martin Geraghty, David Roach et al. Panini Books, 2007. This volume is the fourth in a series reprinting all the comic adventures of the eighth Doctor. It Rhymes With Lust
Arnold Drake, Leslie Waller and Matt Baker. Dark Horse Books, 2007. One of the earliest and might one say best drawn graphic novels ever produced. The reprinting in a facsimile edition of this “Picture Novel” is truly a landmark event. If the prospect of more than 120 pages of sumptuous Matt Baker 'good girl' art isn't enough to get you excited I'd suggest sticking to the spandex crowd. Also included is Arnold Drake's (Doom Patrol et al for DC Comics) essay on the development of the Graphic Novel as a distinct literary form. 136 pages. 99 Ways To Tell A Story - Exercises In Style
(Ref: 99W)

99 Ways To Tell A Story - Exercises In Style
Matt Madden. Jonathan Cape, 2006. Matt Madden's Exercises in Style is a series of one-page comics that tell the same story in a variety of ways. Inspired by Raymond Queneau's 1947 work of the same title, which told a simple story in ninety-nine different styles and genres – haiku, sonnet, book-jacket blurb – Madden does the same but in different styles of comics – Marvel superhero, R. Crumb, Hergé, even as a map or the Bayeux Tapestry. Or he uses varying points of view, visual and verbal parodies, even radical reshuffling of the elements of the story. The result is funny, inspiring, and genuinely clever. 206 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 7½" x 9" (190mm x 229mm) ISBN: 0224079255

The Curiously Sinister Art Of Jim Flora
(Ref: CSAOJF)

The Curiously Sinister Art Of Jim Flora
Irwin Chusid & Barbara Economon. Fantagraphics Books (Revised 2nd Edition), 2007. James (Jim) Flora is best-known for his wild jazz and classical album covers for Columbia Records (late 1940s) and RCA Victor (1950s). He authored and illustrated 17 popular children's books and flourished for decades as a magazine illustrator. Few realize, however, that Flora was also a prolific fine artist with a devilish sense of humor and a flair for juxtaposing playfulness, absurdity and violence.

Flora's album covers pulsed with angular hepcats bearing funnel-tapered noses and shark-fin chins who fingered cockeyed pianos and honked lollipop-hued horns. Yet this childlike exuberance was subverted by a tinge of the diabolic. Flora wreaked havoc with the laws of physics, conjuring flying musicians, levitating instruments, and wobbly dimensional perspectives. Taking liberties with human anatomy, he drew bonded bodies and misshapen heads, while inking ghoulish skin tints and grafting mutant appendages.

He was not averse to pigmenting jazz legends Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa like bedspread patterns. On some Flora figures, three legs and five arms were standard equipment, with spare eyeballs optional. His rarely seen fine artworks reflect the same comic yet disturbing qualities. 180 pages. Worlds of Amano
(Ref: WOA)

Worlds of Amano
Yoshitaka Amano. Dark Horse Press, 2007. Dark Horse have done a good job in picking this book which was originally published in France. To call this lavishly illustrated would be a gross understatement. The book is a comprehensive thirty year overview of the artists work. Amano's became well known thanks to his design work for films and video games such as the famous Final Fantasy series.

His gothic cum fin-de-siecle work has also been used in stage design and even a stained glass window. His dream-like figures are unique in commercial illustration. Arguably Amano is the most significant Japanese artist working today and this book is a fine tribute to him. 156 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 11" x 11" (279mm x 279mm) (ISBN-13: 9781595820648)

My Brush With History
(Ref: MBWH)

My Brush With History
Everett Raymond Kinstler. International Artist, 2005. E.R. Kinstler first came to notice back in the Golden Age of pulp fiction. His work graced many covers in that period including Doc Savage and The Shadow. He also worked in comics creating a much more classical illustrated style than was common at the time.

This book touches on his early commercial art but it focuses on his portrait painting of the great and the good in American public life. Includes official portraits of several US Presidents; Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr, Bill Clinton, movie stars such as John Wayne, Jimmy Cagney and Katharine Hepburn.

This is a wonderful testament to an artist whose work has been acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C. and The Metropolitan Museum Of Art amongst other leading institutions. The artist tells his own story behind the works in autobiographical sketches. 156 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 10" x 12½" (254mm x 317mm) (ISBN: 1929834608)

The Magic Mirror Of M.C. Escher
(Ref: MMOMCE)

The Magic Mirror Of M.C. Escher
Bruno Ernst, featuring the art of Maurits Cornelis Escher. Taschen, 2007. Another title in Taschen’s celebratory 25th anniversary series, "The Magic Mirror" celebrates the confounding yet irresistible work of Dutch conceptual artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. The book goes into fascinating detail to explain how Escher achieved his representations of impossible objects. Although not a trained mathematician he incorporated concepts such as the Penrose triangle and the Necker cube into paintings, murals, woodcuts and even bank notes. There are detailed explanations of his use of perspective and light source and direction that change concave into convex shapes etc.

Ernst, a mathematician, spent a year reviewing all of Escher’s work with the artist to arrive at a complete understanding of these fascinating alternate realities. This is far from being a dry academic tome however, it is a fascinating read in it’s own right. Packed with illustrations including all his famous works (Moebius Strip I and II, Relativity, Sky and Water etc.) together with examples from art history depicting similar work, inspirations and fellow travellers Rene Magritte and Jan van Eyck. 116 pages. Grateful Dead The Illustrated Trip (Limited Edition)
Blair Jackson, Dennis McNally, Stephen Peters and Chuck Wills. Dorling Kindersley, 2003. Out of Print. Fantastic deluxe slipcase limited edition from just 1000 copies of this essential illustrated history of this most famous Group includes a Skeleton and Roses print on heavy art stock by the band’s long-time collaborator Kelly Mouse.

To call this book lavishly illustrated would be a gross understatement. It charts the history of the good old Grateful Dead from 1961 and their pre-history as The Warlocks up do the final concert before Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995 and beyond to the reformed Dead pictured Summer 2003. Features articles on songs, albums and venues and the multitude of people who have worked with the band in some way or other.

There’s a timeline included that links the band’s history to that which was going on in what we laughingly refer to as the Reel World. Illustrations come from gig photos, album covers ticket stubs badges and more memorabilia than you can shake a tie-dye at. The music never stopped indeed!
