Description: Britain under the Swastika - the German occupation of the Channel Islands met a formidable opponent in the Dame of Sark, Sibyl Mary Hathaway (1884-1974).

Dame Hathaway was described by the Home Secretary as "almost wholly mistress of the situation" throughout the occupation, and took command of the German garrison from 10th to 17th May 1945. Illustration from Look and Learn, no. 614, 20th October 1973.

Description: Beautiful dual portrait of Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871) and Charles-François Gounod (1818-1893). Auber is famous for the operas 'Masaniello' (1828), 'Fra Diavolo' (1830) and 'La Sirene' (1844). Gounod composed 'Sappho' (1851), 'Faust' (1859), and 'Philemon et Baucis' (1860).

Description: Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 426, 14th March 1970, "The Story of Soccer". Series of pictures showing memorable firsts in Football, from the top: the first match played with numbers on the players shirts (1933 Cup Final, Everton vs. Manchester City); the first live radio broadcast of a football match (Arsenal vs. Sheffield United, 22nd January 1927); West Bromwich Albion forward W.G. Richardson scoring 4 goals agains West Ham in 5 minutes (7th November 1931);

Arsenal staggering the football world by paying £10,000 for David Jack & £9,000 for Alex James (1928); Newcastle United, whilst at a seaside training camp preparing for a Cup-tie in 1928, adopted a black cat that brought them luck; Eddie Hapgood of Arsenal heading in a penalty that had been saved by the Liverpool Keeper; a Swedish team who stopped shaving until they won a match - which happened 12 months later.

Description: Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 427, 21st March 1970, "The Story of Soccer". Series of pictures showing memorable events in Football, from the top: 1934 Cup Final, Manchester City vs Portsmouth - Frank Swift giving a memorable performance before fainting at the full time whistle; Portsmouth goalie Jock Gilfillan appeared in three Cup Finals (1927 Scottish Cup Final, 1929 & 1934 Cup Final) but didn't gain a winners medal in any of them;

the West Ham team of 1930 were travelling to play Derby but their bus broke down, they managed to hitch a lift in a horse drawn removals van and made it to the stadium in time; Mark Hooper of Sheffield Wednesday had exceptionally small feet. One day he arrived to play an away match and found he had forgotten his boots - eventually a pair that fitted him were found, belonging to the referee's schoolboy son; 1931, Ricardo Zamora, the captain of Spain, wore a large, floppy cap as a lucky mascot - humiliated at a 7-1 defeat at the hands of England, he snatched off his cap and dashed it into the mud, whilst weeping bitterly;

Tottenham Hotspur stopped using the number 13 on a locker after their star winger sustained a series of injuries that almost ruined his career - once the number was painted over the injuries stopped; Frank Barson heading a goal 35 yards for Aston Villa.

Description: Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 430, 11th April 1970. Series of pictures of memorable events in football, from the top: 1938 Cup Final, Preston North End vs. Huddersfield Town - George Mutch takes the match winning penalty; Italy were holders of the World Cup in 1939 when WWII broke out, but the President of the Italian FA kept the cup safe by hiding it under his bed for four years;

1938, England 7 Ireland 0, the partnership of Stanley Matthews and Willie Hall; Before the advent of the white ball, there was often a bucket of whitewash by the side of the pitch to dip the ball in to make it visible on muddy pitches; Sheffield Wednesday once had a monkey mascot;

in Brazil a bored goalie sat in the goalmouth on a bucket and drank an iced drink during a match that saw him undisturbed by the opposition; 1938 Raith Rovers won the Scottish Second Division, having lost only two matches and scored 142 goals - unfortunately they subsequently had a disastrous time in the First Division and were relegated.
