Age of Innocence The Romantic Art of Jeff Jones (Signed) (Limited Edition)
Jeffrey Jones, introduction by Roger Dean. Underwood Books, Grass Valley, CA, 1994. This is an extremely rare very special limited edition of the book published in 1994, and contains 48 paintings by the master of the romantic female form. This edition was made entirely with acid free binding materials. The leather binding is natural undyed bark-tanned calfskin from Scotland. The cover material is a hand made paper from Nepal called Lokta and Three Silks in which the silk threads were dyed prior to being combined with natural cotton pulp.

The lettering on the spine is 24k gold. The SLIPCASE is covered with a German linen sailcloth. Bound in the front is a limited edition pencil drawing which has been hand water coloured and signed by Jeff Jones. Here, he turns his hand to authorship, writing & collating a detailed account of the history & development of the American comic strip. It takes us from the Yellow Kid in 1896 through to 1949, with a closing chapter covering 1950 until the 1970s.

Among the eight major sections, are A New Art Form, The Formative Years: 1896-1910, Girls, Family & Kids: 1920-1929, The Vintage Years & The Comics Go To War. The Comics An Illustrated History Of Comic Strip Art
Jerry Robinson. G.P. Puttnam’s Sons, 1974. Broken into several chapters this hardcover edition details the history of the American comic strip from the Yellow Kid in 1896 through to the 1949. There is also a closing chapter covering 1950 through 1970. There are numerous B&W illustrations with a 30 page colour section in the middle. From Batman artist, Jerry Robinson, this represents a good general reference to the genre.

Hubert H. Crawford. Jonathan David, 1978. Out of Print. Fine. One of the best overviews of American Comic books was written by Hubert H. Crawford, in 1978. It takes the form of an alphabetical review of thirteen major publishers, which include DC, Quality, Fawcett, Fiction House, Dell, Gilberton (Classics Illustrated), Gleason, EC & Marvel/ Atlas/ Timely.

A final section offers synopses, of a further fourteen publishers, including Street & Smith, Whitman, Harvey, Novelty Press, Avon, Aragon (Stanley Morse) & Better. The major sections offer additionally, an alphabetical listing with dates, of the various titles published. The book is well illustrated throughout, with 20 pages in full-colour.
