Unseen America The Greatest Cult Exploitation Magazines 1950-1966
Alan Betrock. Shake Books, 1990. The American fifties are usually thought of as tame and conservative times. But during this era, a relatively forgotten wave of scandal, crime, sex, drugs, gossip, violence, and vice swept over the country. This was the world of 'unseen America', the other side of the rush to middle-class suburban families. For over a decade, this torrent of scandal was brought to the American public via mass circulation magazines - magazines that today offer us a unique view of another America, and graphically illustrate a chapter of American pop culture and journalistic happenings previously left unchronicled. This book shows the hidden side of the American 50s in over 350 photos! 115 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 8" x 10½" (20cm x 25cm)

Our Price: £9.99 ($14.99) (€10,99)

The Untold Story (Signed) (Limited Edition)
CONTAINS ADULT MATERIAL. Frans 'the fox' Leeflang, Davido 'sorted' Howarth. Leeflang-Howarth Ink, 1946. This VERY LIMITED edition introduces two unsung heroes who have become the key movers and cocktail shakers in the field of British comics. Their unqualified knowledge of the genre is matched only by book-keeping brilliance and dogged organizational flair. Their art is always sought after, but never by the cognoscenti. Yet their pencil strokes are sharp, and they have acquired a biro-centric art paradigm that allows their luminous personalities to shine through. Although Woolly Jumpers have - with remorseless enthusiasm - enhanced their output, the heady mix of untutored talent is indubitable. A fascinating tome for all fans of the unknown, and especially recommended for the professional connoisseur. Rare edition, slight yellowing. Too many pages. Very Hard Cover Grey 2" x 4"

Our Price: £12.34 ($18.51) (€13,57)

The Adventures of Tintin at Sea
(Ref: AOTAS)

The Adventures of Tintin at Sea
Yves Horeau edited and translated by Michael Farr. John Murray, 2004. Published in conjunction with the exhibition held at the National Maritime Museum in Grenwhich in 2004 this book is devoted to all things nautical that occurred in Tintin's worldwide adventures. The exhibition marked the 75th anniversary of Hergé's creation.

Although Tintin's adventures were fanciful creations Hergé made certain that the settings were realistic. This book shows exactly how much research was done for Tintin's adventures on the High Seas, which included The Crab with the Golden Claws (where in he first meets Captain Haddock) The Shooting Star, The Secret of the Unicorn and its sequel Red Rackham's Treasure.

The author has assembled a fascinating collection of photographs, maps, diagrams and sketches together with relevant examples from the stories. Great fun for the casual fan and Tintin completists alike. 58 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (225mm x 300mm) ISBN: 0719561191

Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix
(Ref: UCTT)

Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix
James Danky and Denis Kitchen. Abrams ComicArts, 2009. The impact of American underground comix is profound: They galvanized artists both domestically and abroad; they forever changed the economics of comic book publishing; and they influenced generations of cartoonists, including their predecessors. While the works of Robert Crumb and Art Spiegelman are well-known via the New Yorker, Maus, and retrospective collections, the art of their contemporaries such as Gilbert Shelton, Trina Robbins, Justin Green, Kim Deitch, S. Clay Wilson, and many other seminal cartoonists who came of age in the 1960s is considerably less known.

Underground Classics provides the first serious survey of underground comix as art, turning the spotlight on these influential and largely underappreciated artists. Essays from curators James Danky and Denis Kitchen, alongside essays by Paul Buhle, Patrick Rosenkranz, Jay Lynch, and Trina Robbins, offer a thorough reflection and appraisal of the underground movement. Over 125 original drawings, paintings, sculptures, and artifacts are featured, loaned from private collections and the artists themselves, making Underground Classics indispensable for the serious minded comics fan and for the casual reader alike. 144 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (230mm x 310mm) (ISBN-13: 9780810905986)

True Crime Detective Magazines 1924 - 1969
(Ref: TCDM1924)

True Crime Detective Magazines 1924 - 1969
Taschen, October 2008. In 1924 the "true crime" detective magazine genre was born, and it thrived and evolved in all its fishnet-stocking, smoking-gun glory until its demise in the mid-1990s. Cashing in on people's secret voyeuristic, morbid natures, magazines such as True Detective and American Detective profiled scandalous crimes and the villains - often sexy women in stiletto heels - who committed them. Over the years, the magazines became more and more focused on crime and sexuality, until they became smutty to the point of being too racy for the newsstands.

Approximately 500 pages of covers, spreads, and text explore this sensational magazine genre in vibrant detail, with 450 covers. Among the texts included are a profile of the eccentric man who invented the genre in 1924, profiles of the cover artists, a decade-by-decade analysis of what sort of crimes were most popular with readers, profiles of the writers (many of whom went on to fame in crime fiction writing), a feminist scholar's analysis of the portrayal of women on the magazine covers, and a reprint from a 1986 forensic magazine damning the magazines as porno for sadists.

A comprehensive listing of all known titles and their publishers completes this excellent book. 336 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 11" x 10" (278mm x 242mm) (ISBN-13: 9783822825594)
