Description: Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 752 (12 June 1976). The Duchy of Burgundy was a feudal territory in Medieval Europe. It roughly conforms to the modern Bourgogne, although it grew to have considerable possessions in the Low Countries as well.
Existing between 843 and 1477, the Duchy was ruled by a succession of dukes, whose extinction with the death of Charles the Bold in 1477 led to the southern part of the Duchy being absorbed into the French crown by King Louis XI,

Description: The Madness of Rome: Gaius Caesar, known to posterity as Caligula (reigned 37-41AD), is depicted riding his horse Incitatus across a 2 mile long pontoon bridge he ordered constructed across the Bay of Baiae, whilst wearing the breastplate of Alexander the Great. Caligula did this in response to the prediction of a soothsayer named Thrasyllus of Mendes that he "had no more chance of becoming emperor than of riding a horse across the Bay of Baiae".

To the amazement of Francis Ryskes-Chandler, the witch doctor of a remote village in Southern Rhodesia pointed into the distance, revealing in which direction the lost city of Solomon and the treasure lay. Some slight damage due to caption stickers.

The main picture shows Philip V entering Madrid in triumph. There is also an illustration of the defence of Gibraltar during the siege of 1779-1783.

Description: Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 809, 16th July 1977. Commodus (161-192, r.180-192) was Emperor of Rome in the late 2nd Century. Born during his father Marcus Aurelius' reign he eventually showed signs of megalomania and had a passion for fighting as a gladiator in the arena, to the horror of the Roman crowd.
This picture shows Commodus enoying himself at his villa outside Rome, whilst plague swept through the city. His sister rushed to his presence and cried "Don't you know what is going on in Rome?"

Description: When the Netherlands was invaded by the armies of the French "Sun King" Louis XIV, the Dutch responded by blowing up the dykes and flooding their own land to make it useless. The Dutch were lead by William III who was successful on the battlefield and in diplomacy. He was soon seen as the leader of Protestant Europe.

Description: Convinced by Themistocles that their future lay in supremacy at sea, the Athenians built a formidable fleet of triremes - war galleys with three tiers of oars.
