In 1887 the Show visited England and performed for Queen Victoria. During his stay Charlie took part in a 6 day race agianst 2 cyclists across London.

Description: Annie Oakley prepares to shoot a buck while hunting. Oakley, or Phoebe Ann Oakley Mozee as she was born on August 13th 1860. She spent many years in Vaudeville and touring shows showing off her remarkable skills with guns. She continued to win prizes into her 60s despite being partially paralised for a while following a train wreck in 1901.
This wondefully atmospheric art was originally published in World of Wonder #43 as part of the long running and fondly remembered series The Winning of the West.

Description: At precisely twelve noon on September 16, 1893 a cannon's boom unleashed the largest land rush America ever saw. Carried by all kinds of transportation - horses, wagons, trains, bicycles or on foot - an estimated 100,000 raced to claim plots of land in an area of land in northern Oklahoma Territory known as the Cherokee Strip. There had been a number of previous land rushes in the Territory - but this was the big one.
In 1828 Congress designated the land that would become Oklahoma as Indian Territory. White settlers were required to leave, and a number of tribes from the East and South were forcibly moved into the area from their ancestral lands. Chief among these were the Five Civilized Tribes - the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole - who allied themselves with the South during the Civil War. Following the war, the US government looked upon these tribes as defeated enemies. This animosity combined with increasing pressure to open up the Indian Territory to white settlement prompted the first land rush in 1885, a second followed in 1889. By the time of the Oklahoma land rush of 1893, America was in the grip of the worst economic depression it had ever experienced. This was one of the factors that swelled the number of expectant land-seekers that day.
Many would be disappointed. There were only 42,000 parcels of land available - far too few to satisfy the hopes of all those who raced for land that day. Additionally, many of the "Boomers" - those who had waited for the cannon's boom before rushing into the land claim - found that a number of the choice plots had already been claimed by "Sooners" who had snuck into the land claim area before the race began. The impact of the land rush was immediate, transforming the terrain almost overnight. Gorgeous dramatic art by the incomparable Ron Embleton originally published in World of Wonder #105 as part of the fondly remembered The Winning of the West series (part 10) in 1972. A rare example of an Embleton signed strip in this series.
Texan Cowboys Driving Cattle North (Original) (Signed)

Description: Early cattle drives headed west to the California gold fields after 1850, when cattle worth $5 to $10 a head in Texas would garner five to 20 times that amount in San Francisco. Most drives to California took five or six months. Starting in the vicinity of San Antonio or Fredericksburg, many drives followed a southern route through El Paso to San Diego or Los Angeles and on north to San Francisco. These drives slowed by 1857, as the cattle market in California reached a glut. By 1859, only a trickle of cattle moved to the West Coast.
After gold was discovered in the Rocky Mountains, some cattle were driven to the gold fields there, starting about 1858. Some ranchers held contracts to supply beef to frontier forts and to Indian reservations in West Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico beginning in the late 1850s. Cattle ranching virtually halted during the Civil War years, as the frontier retreated. Beginning in 1866, however, ranching and cattle trailing expanded rapidly.
This is a rare example of a signed painting by Ron Embleton from the series The Winning of the West published in World of Wonder #100 1972. It shows his command of accuracy and detail in historical settings.

Giants with only one eye in their forhead, children of the earth, Gaea They ate humans, were not very intelligent and had given Zeus the thunder and lightning as a sign of gratitude when he released them from the underworld. They worked as Hephaestus' helpers under the volcano Etna making Zeus's lightning, but were killed by Apollo as a revenge for Zeus's killing his son Aclepius.
The most famous cyclop was Polyphemus who Odysseus blinded after making him drunk. In general, Homer described the cyclops as wild savages who did not use agriculture or laws other than each man to himself. This can be seen as an allegory of the barbarians, the non-Greeks. Other named cyclops were Brontes, Steropes and Arges.

Description: In March 1542 George Ferrers MP (1500-1579) was arrested as he had agreed to stand surety for a friends debts. His friend had defaulted on his debt and so Ferrers was arrested and taken to debtors prison. When Ferrers' fellow MPs heard of his arrest they ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Commons to go and release Ferrers.
The prison officials refused and, according to Raphael Holinshed's Chronicle, there "ensued a fray within the Counter gates between Ferrers and the officers, not without hurt of either part, so that the serjeant was driven to defend himself with his mace of arms, and had the Crown thereof broken off by bearing off a stroke, and his man struck down". Shortly after this, the two sheriffs of London appeared, but treated the Sergeant-at-Arms with great contempt.
When these events were communicated to the House of Commons the MPs informed the Lords of what had happened and both ruled that the offenders could be punished by Parliament. Subsequently Ferrers' was released, the prison officials and the Sheriffs of London were imprisoned in the Tower for a fortnight.
This case was instrumental in the formation of parliamentary privilege of freedom from arrest. This beautiful and powerful piece of original artwork is from Look and Learn no. 393, 26th July 1969.

Sir Richard Whittington (1354-1423) was a merchant and poltician who was also the real-life inspiration behind the pantomime character, Dick Whittington. He bequeathed his fortune to form the Charity of Sir Richard Whittington (founded 1424), which still operates in 21st Century Britain. Sir Richard was Lord Mayor of London four times (1397, 1398, 1406 and 1419).
This illustration shows two scenes from Sir Richard's life, firstly, his position as a scullery boy when he first came to London, and secondly, his successful cloth business.
Grey Owl (Archibald Belaney) (Original)

Description: Archibald Belaney was born in Hastings, England, in 1888. During his time at Hastings Grammar School he became fascinated by American Indians. In 1906 he sailed to Halifax, Canada, and began work as a fur-trapper.
During his time there, he married a lady from the Ojjibwa and adopted the name 'Grey Owl'. Eventually Belaney created a full blown identity as a native American, claiming he was the son of a Scottish father and an Apache mother. He served as a sniper during the First World War, but was badly wounded in April 1916 and was honourably discharged in November 1917.
In 1925 Grey Owl met a 19 year old Mohawk Iroquois lady named Gertrude Bernard, aka Anahareo, whom he eventually married. She was a huge influence on his life and pushed him towards thinking about conservation. He started writing and speaking about conservation and environmentalism, and toured Canada and England in 1835-1938 and met King George VI at Buckingham Palace.
However, he was increasingly fatigued from touring, and alcoholism had weakened him further, and he died on 13th April 1938. Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 503, 4th September 1971.

Description: Edward John Eyre (1815-1901), together with his aboriginal friend Wylie, was the first man to cross southern Australia from east to west, travelling across the Nullarbor Plain from Adelaide to Albany. Eyre was born in England where his father was a minister. He came to Australia when he was seventeen years old. This ORIGINAL painting shows his two year journey across Australia.

Description: Francis, 2nd Duke of Guise (February 17, 1519 - February 24, 1563) was a French soldier and politician. Guise was the son of Claude of Guise and his wife Antoinette of Bourbon. His sister Mary of Guise was wife of James V of Scotland and mother of Mary I of Scotland. He led the French to victory over Germany at Metz in 1552 and captured Calais from the English in 1558. Guise was one of the leaders of the Catholic faction in the French Wars of Religion, and his massacre of Huguenots at Wassy-sur-Blaise on March 1, 1562 marked the starting point of that conflict. He was assassinated by Huguenot fanatics in 1563.

Description: Wicked Wanda was a full colour satirical adult comic strip. Written by Frederic Mullally and superbly drawn by Ron Embleton, it featured in Penthouse magazine from 1969 - 1979. This original is one of the finest examples we have ever seen. A rare double page spread, it feature a host of well known real celebrities and politicians of the day. As well as the principal characters of Wanda Von Kreesus, Candyfloss, Homer Sapiens, J Hoover Grud and Walter Von Kreesus this superbly painted original features Bob Hope, Alan Whicker, Bobby Fischer, Richard Burton, Mao Tse Tung, Ringo Starr, Robert Mitchum, Ronald Regan and many many more. This was a quality strip, still fondly remembered. In 1957, he began work on what is probably his finest black and white strip, Don o’ the Drums for Mickey Mouse Weekly. 1957 was a halcyon year for Embleton for it also saw him blazing forth, for the first time in full colour, on the front page of the new Express Weekly comic with Wulf the Briton .Biggles , took over the front page of the now retitled TV Express , drawn and painted by Ron Embleton. The editor of TV Express decided that Second World War adventures were more commercially popular for their front page and, as Ron Embleton was their number one artist, he was given first Battleground and then Colonel Pinto . Both series show, not only his love for action, but his ability to research a subject thoroughly and get the uniforms and hardware absolutely right.Boy’s World , where again he worked on a full-colour strip, Wrath of the Gods , scripted by Michael Moorcock. Moving on to TV Century 21 , in 1965, Ron began to draw Gerry Anderson’s puppet creations, Stingray and Captain Scarlett in strip form.Children of the New Forest for Princess , My Girl, Mary for June Book of 1964; and Zizi and the Dacoits for the Girl’s Crystal Annual of 1964. These publications were successful and Ron became a major contributor to both Once Upon a Time and Look and Learn .Housestead Fort , produced as a postcard, has sold more than one million copies.
