(Ref: BaraldiSRoomCandleLL)

Artist: Severino Baraldi

Medium: Gouache on Board

Size: 12" x 15" (310mm x 390mm)

Date: 1980

Description: Cock Lane is a short alleyway adjacent to London's Smithfield Market and the story centred on three people: William Kent, a usurer from Norfolk, Richard Parsons, a parish clerk, and his daughter Elizabeth. Following the death of his wife Elizabeth Lynes during childbirth, Kent had become romantically involved with her sister, Fanny.

The couple were prevented by canon law from marrying, but moved to London, where they lodged at a property owned by Parsons. While there, reports were made of strange knocking sounds and ghostly apparitions. Fanny became pregnant and the couple moved out, at which point the knocking sounds ceased, but she later died of smallpox. About 18 months later Parsons claimed that his property was haunted by Fanny's ghost.

The hauntings appeared to centre around his eldest daughter, Elizabeth. A commission, whose members included Samuel Johnson, investigated the matter, and it concluded that the supposed haunting was a fraud. Further investigations proved that the scam was being perpetrated by Elizabeth Parsons, under duress from her father. The conspirators were prosecuted, and Richard Parsons was pilloried, and sentenced to two years in prison.

Right portrait is of Colonel David du Bose Gaillard, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Artist: Severino Baraldi

Medium: Watercolour on Board

Size: 18" x 14" (450mm x 360mm)

Description: At the end of the Second World War a group of SS Soldiers arrived in the small village next to Lake Toplitz in Austria. They commandeered horses to transport a large number of boxes to the lake, and then proceeded to dump those boxes in the lake.

It has long been speculated that part of the large amount of gold stolen from the Reichsbank during the Fall of Berlin was in this consignment.

What is know is that in 1959 an expedition financed by a German magazine recovered a printing press and £72 million in forged 1940s pound sterling currency.

In 1983 during a biological survey, yet more forged pounds were discovered, along with numerous Nazi-era rockets and missiles that had been tested there. Original artwork from Look and Learn.

Artist: Severino Baraldi

Medium: Watercolour on Board

Size: 15" x 19" (370mm x 490mm)

Date: 1979

Description: Quirky illustration of the famous Montgolfier Brothers, Joseph-Michel (1740-1810) and Jacques-Étienne (1745-1799), pioneering balloon inventors. To the top are portraits of the Montgolfier Brothers, flanked by an illustration of the incident where Joseph-Michel, whilst gazing into a fire, had come to the conclusion that the smoke from the fire contained a gas that caused embers to rise (he called this gas, modestly, Montgolfier Gas).

He began to speculate whether or not this gas could levitate other things. Below this is an illustration of the reaction to their first experiment with flight, in December 1782. Their unmanned balloon flew for just over a mile and was destroyed by terrified locals upon its landing.

The next illustration shows the Montgolfiers demonstrating their balloon to a crowd of dignitaries from the Etats particulars, at Annonay, on 4th June 1783. Finally, the remaining illustration shows an airship. From Look and Learn no. 916, 11th August 1979.

After at least 16 murders they were caught when one of their lodging house mates came across a corpse. Hare turned Kings Evidence and his evidence led to Burke being hanged on 28th January 1829. Hare was released in February 1829 and was last seen in Carlisle, although persistent legend claims that he ended his days as a blind beggar on the streets of London.

Will Adams The Man Who Unlocked Japan (Original)Will Adams The Man Who Unlocked Japan (Original)
(Ref: BaraldiAdam)

Severino Baraldi. Will Adams was a Jacobean who discovered Japan when it was still unknown to the rest of the world. In the winter of 1611, a letter was received by the merchants of the East India Company. The fact that it came from Japan, a forbidden and unknown land, was a cause of wonder, but even more remarkable was that the writer was an Englishman by the name of William Adams. Adams had sailed to the East in 1598, but most of his company had died by the time their ship was washed up unexpectedly in Japan. He fell in love with the barbaric splendour of the country and decided to settle. An original painting in pen and ink and gouache depicting Will Adams' landing. 6" x 7" (15cm x 18cm) Gouache Board

Ferdinand de Magellan in 1520 (Original)Ferdinand de Magellan in 1520 (Original)
(Ref: BaraldiMag)

Severino Baraldi. Ferdinand de Magellan was born about 1470 of noble parents and probably spent his boyhood as a page of the Queen of Portugal. As a young man he was in the East India service, then in Morocco. After a slight from King Manuel, he enlisted under the Spanish king, and set forth his project for a trip round the world. The expedition set sail August 10, 1519. Magellan was killed in April 1521 at Zebu [in the Phillippines], but they had already reached the eastern edge of the known world, and his men completed the voyage to Spain. The voyage proved that the earth is round (although most educated people knew this already!). This painting depicts Magellan on board during his voyage of discovery. 15" x 8" (38cm x 20cm) Gouache Board

Our Price: £175.00 ($262.50) (€192,50)

Chief Joseph (Original)Chief Joseph (Original)
(Ref: BaraldiJoe)

Severino Baraldi. An original painting depicting the Nez Perce chief Joseph and his brilliant strategic retreat. One of the most brilliant military retreats in American history. Even the unsympathetic General William Tecumseh Sherman could not help but be impressed with the 1,400 mile march, stating that 'the Indians throughout displayed a courage and skill that elicited universal praise... [they] fought with almost scientific skill, using advance and rear guards, skirmish lines, and field fortifications.' In over three months, the band of about 700, fewer than 200 of whom were warriors, fought 2,000 U.S. soldiers and Indian auxiliaries in four major battles and numerous skirmishes. By the time he formally surrendered on October 5, 1877, Joseph was widely referred to in the American press as 'the Red Napoleon'. 17" x 6" (43cm x 15cm) Gouache Board
