Description: Desperately Billy Dixon heaved his wounded companion across his back and began the dangerous journey back to the safety of the buffalo wallow (an indentation in the ground created by buffalos). The inset shows Dixon wave with relief as he realises that the horsemen approaching him were Cavalry and not Indians. Description: Almost 150,000 men of Irish descent were recruited into the Union army during the American civil war, many of them into the special Irish Brigade. Both sides played on Irish nationalism - posters appeared reminding expatriate Irishmen of victories over the English; but the outcome of the war did nothing for Irish freedom. Inset shows one of Ireland's famous fighting sons, Henry Knox, who rose to become Commander-in-Chief of the American army in 1783. Inset shows Commodore Perry Owens, the hard-shooting sheriff of Nevaho County. 'He's only a child, sheriff. Don't shoot him,' Mrs Blevins pleaded. Description: Captain William Bligh surprised by mutineers on The Bounty. Although he was cast adrift in an open boat his superb seamanship saved his life. The crew mutineered after a long and perilous voyage to Tahiti, many could not stomach the thought of a return trip after sampling the good life on the island.
Note a section 90mm x 90mm has been cut out of the art upper right for editorial reasons and later replaced. Does not affect main action in the picture.
Bounty Mutineers On Pitcairn (Original)

Description: Hannibal is presented with the decapitated head of his brother the general Hasdrubal and proclaimes "I see there the fate of Carthage". Clash of Giants: Always Winning But Never the Victor. Hannibal was losing ground in Spain when his brother Hasdrubal led reinforcements through the Alps.
Hasdrubal was defeated and slain before he could link up with his brother's army and Hannibal's first sight of his dead brother was when his severed head was thrown by the Romans into Hannibal's camp. Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 926 (20 October 1979).
