Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Book 4
(Ref: MOOMIN4)

Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Book 4
Tove Jansson. Drawn & Quarterly, May 2008. Tove Jansson is revered around the world as one of the foremost children's authors of the twentieth century for her illustrated chapter books regarding the magical worlds of her creation, the Moomins. The Moomins saw life in many forms but debuted to its biggest audience ever on the pages of world's largest newspaper the London Evening News, in 1954. The strip was syndicated in newspapers around the world with millions of readers in 40 countries. Moomin Book Four continues Drawn & Quarterly's publishing plan to reprint the entire strip drawn by Jansson before she handed over the reigns to her brother Lars in 1960. This is the first time the strip will be published in any form in North America and will deservedly place Jansson among the international cartooning greats of the last century.

The Moomins are a tight-knit family – hippo-shaped creatures with easygoing and adventurous outlooks. Jansson's art is pared down and precise, yet able to compose beautiful portraits of ambling creatures in fields of flowers or rock-strewn beaches that recall Jansson's Nordic roots. The comic strip reached out to adults with its gentle and droll sense of humor. Whimsical but with biting undertones, Jansson's observations of everyday life, including guests who overstay their welcome, modern art, movie stars, and high society, easily caught the attention of an international audience and still resonate today. The stories in this volume include Moomin Goes Wild West, Snorkmaiden Goes Rococo plus three others. 110 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 9" x 12" (220mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9781897299784)

R. Crumb's Sex Obsessions (Signed) (Limited Edition)
(Ref: RCSO)

R. Crumb's Sex Obsessions (Signed) (Limited Edition)
Robert Crumb, Edited by Dian Hanson. Taschen, 2007. This book contains Robert Crumb's personal selection of his most secret fantasies, re-coloured by hand just for this volume. They have little to do with the standard procreative urge, Mr. Crumb admits. He has also said he finds nothing more boring than someone else's sexual obsessions, and yet through his long career the world's most famous underground cartoonist has felt compelled to include his own sex fantasies in his art. He explains it as a compulsive catharsis, while fans call R. Crumb's erotic fantasies the Master at his best.

Now Crumb has selected his most intimately revealing comic strips and single page drawings to create a 258 page encyclopaedic trip through his sexual psyche. All images were created between 1980 and 2006, and all strips are hand-coloured for a lush vibrancy never seen in his comic books. In total the book features 14 complete stories, including My Troubles With Women, If I Were a King, A Bitchin' Bod, and How To Have Fun With a Strong Girl, as well as 60 single page drawings.

The artist admits it's a little scary to see his most fevered obsessions collected end to end like this, but fans will find Robert Crumb's Sex Obsessions a fascinating peek inside an often tortured, always brilliantly talented mind, as well as an unparalleled collector's item.

This signed limited edition of 1,000 copies is a work of art in itself, with every part of the book—front and back covers, spine, and introductory pages—created for this project by Robert Crumb. Each book is in its slipcase and also comes with an art print selected by Crumb. (Only 500 copies were made available outside the USA of this sought-after collector's item.) 258 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 8" x 11" (203mm x 274mm) (ISBN-13: 9783822825402)

Blazing Combat
(Ref: BLAZCOMBAT)

Blazing Combat
Archie Goodwin author / editor, Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood, Alex Toth et al art. Fantagraphics Books, 2009. For the first time ever, the Legendary anti-war comic collected in its entirety. Written by Archie Goodwin and drawn by such luminaries as Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood, John Severin, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Gene Colan, Blazing Combat was originally published by independent comics publisher James Warren in 1965 and '66. Following in the tradition of Harvey Kurtzman's Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat, Goodwin's stories reflected the human realities and personal costs of war rather than exploiting the clichés of the traditional men's adventure genre. They were among the best comics stories about war ever published.

Blazing Combat ended after its fourth issue when military post exchanges refused to sell the title due to their perception that it was an anti-war comic. Their hostility was fueled by the depiction of the then-current Vietnam War, especially a story entitled “Landscape,” which follows the thoughts of a simple Vietnamese peasant rice-farmer who pays the ultimate price simply for living where he does — and which was considered anti-war agitprop by the more hawkish members of the business community.

Writer Archie Goodwin and the original publisher James Warren discuss the death of Blazing Combat and market censorship as well as the creative gestation of the series in exclusive interviews. 208 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 8" x 10" (203mm x 254mm) (ISBN-13: 9781560979654)

Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix
(Ref: UCTT)

Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix
James Danky and Denis Kitchen. Abrams ComicArts, 2009. The impact of American underground comix is profound: They galvanized artists both domestically and abroad; they forever changed the economics of comic book publishing; and they influenced generations of cartoonists, including their predecessors. While the works of Robert Crumb and Art Spiegelman are well-known via the New Yorker, Maus, and retrospective collections, the art of their contemporaries such as Gilbert Shelton, Trina Robbins, Justin Green, Kim Deitch, S. Clay Wilson, and many other seminal cartoonists who came of age in the 1960s is considerably less known.

Underground Classics provides the first serious survey of underground comix as art, turning the spotlight on these influential and largely underappreciated artists. Essays from curators James Danky and Denis Kitchen, alongside essays by Paul Buhle, Patrick Rosenkranz, Jay Lynch, and Trina Robbins, offer a thorough reflection and appraisal of the underground movement. Over 125 original drawings, paintings, sculptures, and artifacts are featured, loaned from private collections and the artists themselves, making Underground Classics indispensable for the serious minded comics fan and for the casual reader alike. 144 pages. Humbug
(Ref: HUMBUG)

Humbug
Harvey Kurtzman, Will Elder, Arnold Roth, Al Jaffee, Jack Davis. Fantagraphics, 2009. Harvey Kurtzman changed the face of American humour when he created the legendary MAD comic. As editor and chief writer from its inception in 1952, through its transformation into a slick magazine, until he left MAD in 1956, he influenced an entire generation of cartoonists, comedians, and filmmakers. In 1962, he co-created the long-running Little Annie Fanny with his long-time artistic partner Will Elder for Playboy, which he continued to produce until his virtual retirement in 1988.

Between MAD and Annie Fanny, Kurtzman's biographical summaries will note that he created and edited three other magazines, Trump, Humbug, and Help! Whereas his MAD and Annie Fanny are readily available in reprint form, his major satirical work in the interim period is virtually unknown. Humbug, which had poor distribution, may be the least known, but to those who treasure the rare original copies, it equals or even exceeds MAD in displaying Kurtzman's creative genius.

Humbug was unique in that it was actually published by the artists who created it: Kurtzman and his cohorts from MAD Will Elder, Jack Davis, and Al Jaffee, were joined by universally acclaimed cartoonist Arnold Roth.

With no publisher above them to rein them in, this little band of creators produced some of the most trenchant and engaging satire of American culture ever to appear on American newsstands. At last, the entire run of 11 issues of Humbug is being reprinted in a deluxe format, much of it reproduced from the original art, allowing even owners of the original cheaply-printed issues to experience the full impact for the first time. 476 pages. Reynold Brown: A Life In Pictures
Daniel Zimmer and David J. Hornung. The Illustrated Press, 2009. William Reynold Brown (1917–1991) was a prolific American artist whose career embraced virtually every facet of the illustration field. During his life he produced work for the newspaper comics (Tailspin Tommy), invented the concept of the “cutaway” drawing for North American Aviation, painted covers for some of the first paperback books ever published, illustrated scores of magazines and magazine covers, and most notably produced over 300 movie posters for the motion picture industry. After his retirement from commercial illustration, Reynold found success as a fine artist, producing hundreds of oil paintings and drawings for the Western art market.

Norman Saunders
David Saunders. The Illustrated Press, 2008. Norman Saunders (1907–1989) was the legendary illustrator of Mars Attacks, Wacky Packages, Batman, Pre-Code Comics, Men's Adventure, Paperbacks, Pulp Magazines, and Sci-Fi. His unique artistic vision influenced the visual language of American pop culture throughout a century of changing fashions, and continues to inspire today's important visionaries.

Savvy collectors have long dreamt of a book on the entire lifework of Norman Saunders, and here is the world's first book to present his finest paintings in radiant reproductions, to savour the extraordinary artistry behind so many iconic images, familiar from timeworn vintage collectibles.

The artist's son has written an insightful biography, seasoned with quotes from the artist and his associates, chronicling the frontier childhood and training of an illustrator who rose to the top of his profession, and then spent WWII in China painting travel sketches. When Saunders defied the corporate forces of conformity during McCarthyism he was relegated to underground world of subculture publishing, where he continued his remarkable career by painting countless icons for Pre-Code Comics, Men's Adventure magazines and Bubble Gum Trading Cards, until his happy rediscovery by fandom in his twilight years.

This is the consummate reference book on the entire lifework of Norman Saunders, with over 880 illustrations, of which more than 300 are from original art, including 30 working drawings, and 30 reference photos as well as 30 historic family photos, and checklists of all published works. 368 pages. Allen St. John and concentrates on the artist's full-colour fantasy, science-fiction and adventure paintings for novels and Pulp-magazines for famous authors, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jack Williamson, Robert E. Renowned for his wink-and-flirt pin-up art, Stevens is credited with revitalizing interest in, championing the rights of, and befriending the reclusive 1950s model Bettie Page and he recounts their first meeting and subsequent adventures together - including a trip to the Playboy Mansion.Featuring a wealth of iconic paintings and previously unpublished art, "Brush with Passion" also features commentary by comic book greats Todd Schorr, Richard Hescox, Michael William Kaluta and William Stout. 288 pages. The Complete Adventures of The Three Musketeers
Alexandre Dumas, illustrated by Arturo del Castillo. Book Palace Books, November 2009. The Three Musketeers are amongst the handful of literary characters who are known to virtually every person on the planet! Unlike most literary characters, the Musketeers are fashioned out of history: there really was a d'Artagnan and historical counterparts for each of his companions, although the romance woven around the characters came from author Alexandre Dumas's imagination.

Collected in a single volume for the first time, this classic of comic strip adaptation brings to life all the action and poignancy of Dumas's novel and its sequel (the enthralling mystery surrounding the Man in the Iron Mask). 112 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 9" x 12" (220mm x 297mm) (ISBN-13: 9780955159688)
