West Coast Blues
(Ref: WCB)

West Coast Blues
Jacques Tardi. Fantagraphics, 2009. A savage Noir thriller --- George Gerfaut, aimless young executive and desultory family man, witnesses a murder and finds himself sucked into a spiral of violence involving an exiled war criminal and two hired assassins. Adapting to the exigencies of his new life on the run with shocking ease, Gerfaut abandons his comfortable middle-class life for several months (including a sojourn in the countryside after an attempt to ride the rails turns spectacularly bad) until, joined with a new ally, he finally returns to settle all accounts... with brutal, bloody interest.

Originally released in 2005, West Coast Blues (Le Petit bleu de la côte ouest) is Tardi's adaptation of a popular 1976 novel by the French crime writer Jean-Patrick Manchette. (The novel had been previously adapted to film under the more literal title Trois hommes à abattre, and was released in English by the San Francisco-based publisher City Lights under the English version of the same title, 3 to Kill.)

Tardi's late-period, looser style infuses Manchette's dark story with a seething, malevolent energy; he doesn't shy away from the frequently grisly goings-on, while maintaining (particularly in the old-married-couple-style bickering of the two killers who are tracking Gerfaut) the mordant wit that characterizes his best work. This is the kind of graphic novel that Quentin Tarantino would love, and a double shot of Scotch for any fan of unrelenting, uncompromising crime fiction. 80 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 7" x 11" (190mm x 270mm) (ISBN-13: 9781606992951)

You Are There
(Ref: YAT)

You Are There
Jacques Tardi, Jean-Claude Forest. Fantagraphics, 2009. THE SATIRICAL MASTERPIECE THAT USHERED IN THE GRAPHIC NOVEL ERA TO EUROPEAN COMICS… FINALLY AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH.

One of the earliest full-length, standalone graphic novels to be published in Europe, and certainly one of the best and most original, Ici Même was serialized in the adult French comics monthly (A suivre) in the early 1980s and then released in book form. A quarter of a century later, this dark, funny, consistently surprising masterpiece has finally been translated into English.

An unexpected yet smoothly confident collaboration between the darkly cynical Jacques Tardi and the playful fantasist Jean-Claude Forest (of Barbarella fame), You Are There is set on a small island off the coast of France, where unscrupulous landowners have succeeded in overtaking the land from the last heir of a previously wealthy family. That heir, whose domain, in a Beckettian twist, is now reduced to the walls that border these patches of land he used to own, prowls the walls all day, eking out a living by collecting tolls at each gate.

His seemingly hopeless struggle to recover his birthright becomes complicated as the government sees a way of using his plight for the sake of political expediency, and the romantic intervention of the daughter of one of the landowners (who has her own sordid history with the politician) engenders further difficulties, culminating in an apocalyptic, hallucinatory finale.

Set in Tardi's preferred early 20th century milieu, You Are There is drawn in his crisp 1980s neo-“clear line” style, gorgeously detailed, elegantly stylized, with impossibly deep slabs of black: You Are There is a feast for both the eyes and the brain. 196 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 8" x 11" (210mm x 270mm) (ISBN-13: 9781606992944)

The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 1
(Ref: AOHIOT1)

The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 1
Philippe Goddin, Hergé. Last Gasp, 2008. The first in a three-volume series, The Art of Herge presents a selection of Herge's outstanding, often unpublished, drawings showing the diversity of his work and offering the reader a view of the range of his talent.

Georges Remi, better known as Hergé, the creator of Tintin & Snowy, was born a century ago. He left us an exceptional legacy, at the center of which was Tintin, but also included much other work. From generation to generation the popularity of his creation has carried on and been extended, to such a degree that whatever their age, many readers feel they have grown up with Tintin.

This first volume of The Art of Herge covers the years 1907 to 1937, during which the range of Herge's drawing is evident: his childhood and schoolboy sketches, the first published drawings, his burgeoning work as an illustrator and graphic designer, the advertisements, occasional paintings and, of course, the comics for which he became famous. One witnesses his development as a young and successful artist with the promise of further achievements to come.

From his childhood onwards, we can judge the range of his talent from the vast number of drawings Herge produced. The prolific output of the master of the "clear line" included advertisements, comic strips, illustrations, fashion designs and caricatures. In this series, Herge's work is presented in chronological order, with many high-quality reproductions of the art. The artwork is accompanied by concise commentary, allowing us a closer look into the artist's daily routine and output. 208 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (225mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9780867197068)

Rip Kirby The First Modern Detective Complete Comic Strips 1946-1948
(Ref: RKTFMD1)

Rip Kirby The First Modern Detective Complete Comic Strips 1946-1948
Alex Raymond. IDW Publishing, 2009. The first in IDW’s new series reprinting 30 months of daily continuity in their gorgeously presented Library of American Comics. Created by Alex Raymond when he was deactivated from the Marines after World War II, Rip Kirby was a fresh approach to the genre, a departure from the prevailing hard-boiled style of detective fiction. Rip Kirby was urbane and cerebral, and used scientific methods as often as he used his fists when solving crimes and mysteries.

Edited and designed by Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney, the strips are reproduced from pristine syndicate proofs that will allow readers to see, for the first time, the luxurious detail of Raymond's brushwork. Includes a biographical and historic essay by Brian Walker, and an introduction by Raymond biographer and authority Tom Roberts.

An ideal companion to Tom Roberts’ recent biography Alex Raymond: His Life and Art. 320 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 11" x 10" (290mm x 265mm) (ISBN-13: 9781600104848)

The Chronicles Of Conan volume 18 Isle of the Dead and other stories
(Ref: TCOC18)

The Chronicles Of Conan volume 18 Isle of the Dead and other stories
Bruce Jones, John Buscema, Marc Silvestri and others. Dark Horse Comics, 2009. Taking over writing duties on Conan the Barbarian in the early 1980s, Bruce Jones brought his humor and horror sensibilities -- as well as his knack for telling great short stories -- to the title, invigorating John Buscema, who returned to work on the series with Conan #136. In this volume, these two comic-book titans lead Conan on a thrilling tour of Hyboria -- from the monster-infested Bossonian Marshes to the hideous slave markets of Belthem -- as Conan encounters strange, supernatural foes, beguiling women, and overconfident rulers.

Stories like 'The River of Death', 'Titan's Gambit', and the two-part 'Spider Isle' adventure are meticulously restored and recolored, and Jones and Buscema are joined by such talents as Ernie Chan, Mark Silvestri, Val Mayerik, Alfredo Alcala, and others.

This volume collects Conan the Barbarian issues #135 to #142, including all original series covers. 204 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 7" x 10" (170mm x 255mm) (ISBN-13: 9781595823823)

The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb
(Ref: BOG)

The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb
Robert Crumb illustrator. Norton, 2009. From Creation to the death of Joseph, here are all 50 chapters of the Book of Genesis, revealingly illustrated as never before. Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, reveals the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a take off of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated by the Bible's language, “a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions”, that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation using the text word for word in a version primarily assembled from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Bible.

Now, Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers, can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic, and even juicy stories. Crumb's Book of Genesis reintroduces us to the bountiful tree-lined garden of Adam and Eve, the massive ark of Noah with beasts of every kind, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by brimstone and fire, and the Egypt of the Pharaoh, where Joseph's embalmed body is carried in a coffin, in a scene as elegiac as any in Genesis. Using clues from the text and peeling away theological and scholarly interpretations that have often obscured the Bible's most dramatic stories, Crumb fleshes out a parade of Biblical originals: from the serpent in Eden, the humanoid reptile appearing like an alien out of a science fiction movie, to Jacob, a “kind've depressed guy who doesn't strike you as physically courageous”, and his bother, Esau, “a rough and kick ass guy”, to Abraham's wife Sarah, more fetching than most woman at 90, to God himself, “a standard Charlton Heston-like figure with long white hair and a flowing beard”.

As Crumb writes in his introduction, “the stories of these people, the Hebrews, were something more than just stories. They were the foundation, the source, in writing of religious and political power, handed down by God himself.” Crumb's Book of Genesis, the culmination of 5 years of painstaking work, is a tapestry of masterly detail and storytelling which celebrates the astonishing diversity of the one of our greatest artistic geniuses. 224 pages. The Upside-Down World of Gustave Verbeek
(Ref: UDWOGV)

The Upside-Down World of Gustave Verbeek
Peter Maresca, Gustave Verbeek. Sunday Press, 2009. One of the eight wonders of the comics world: The Upside Downs of Little Lady Lovekins and Old Man Muffaroo. The one Sunday page came in two parts: the first is read like a regular comic, then you turn the page upside down and the images transform to illustrate the story that continues with the panels in their new position and order. This volume features a complete run of the Upside Downs (1903-1905), digitally restored and presented in their original size and colors. Also featured are a complete run of Verbeek's Loony Lyrics of Lulu (1910) and a sampling of his long-running favorite, Terrors of the Tiny Tads (1906-1914). As a bonus, a collection of 25 painting and drawings from books illustrated by Verbeek (1910-1915) fill out this high-quality hardbound volume.

Verbeek's work has influenced, directly or indirectly, Maurice Sendak, Dr. Suess, and many other illustrators and cartoonists. Foreword by recreational mathematics scholar Martin Gardner, and contributions by comics historians Jeet Heer, Marco Graziosi and Richard Marschall. This book will have great appeal to collectors, archivists, and fans of illustrated childrens fantasy stories. From the publishers of the beloved and acclaimed "Little Nemo: So Many Splendid Sundays" deluxe reprint, with the same magnificent production values.

Each book includes a set of 12 Tiny Tads postcards, replicated from the Verbeek originals of 1907 - 1910. From 1907 to 1913, Gustave Verbeek's Tiny Tads Postcards were created as an advertising tool for small businesses. Looking like personal postcards, individual stores printed promotional messages in cursive text. Now, for the first time, these cards have been restored without advertising. 120 pages. Commando Battle of Britain Scramble
(Ref: CBOBS)

Commando Battle of Britain Scramble
George Low, Editor. Carlton Books, 2009. For everyone in Britain, these were the darkest days of the Second World War. Our army, or what was left of it, had been withdrawn from France via the beaches of Dunkirk, disabling and abandoning arms and equipment during the desperate evacuation. While they reorganized and re-equipped there was no effective fighting force to stand against Hitler's Wehrmacht should they choose to invade.

Crossing the channel with an invasion fleet was, however, not an operation to be contemplated without complete control of the sky, otherwise the transports and landing craft would be blown out of the water by the RAF.

The Nazis' answer? Neutralise the RAF. Destroy its runways, destroy its aircraft on the ground, destroy its support networks and, most of all, kill its pilots. The RAF, of course, had other ideas and during the summer of 1940 the Battle of Britain was fought in the skies over southern England. The courage and skill of the RAF pilots and ground crews during those few hectic weeks has formed the backdrop to some of the most outstanding Commando tales ever published. Stories like "Ace Without Honour", "Island of Heroes" and "Brigand Squadron" as well as "Blind Courage", "Fly Fast-Shoot Fast" or "Spitfire Spirit" bring the atmosphere of the battle spinning into the 21st century.

Presented 25 per cent larger than when originally published, this special edition drops you out of the sun into the midst of the dog fights, the howl of the Merlin engine on full boost almost drowning out the roar of the Brownings thundering away either side of your cockpit. Whether you are a novice 'sprog' comic book pilot or a seasoned veteran, the fantastic aero art created by the Commando artists and the compelling stories will leave you gasping for the next 'Scramble'! 656 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 7" x 9" (178mm x 229mm) (ISBN-13: 9781847324214)

More Commando reprints featuring the best stories from the popular series.

From the Pen of Paul: The Fantastic Images of Frank R. Paul
(Ref: FTPOP)

From the Pen of Paul: The Fantastic Images of Frank R. Paul
Stephen D. Korshak, Frank R Paul (artist). Shasta-Phoenix, 2009. Frank R. Paul (1884-1963), now a member of the Science-Fiction Hall of Fame, is the undisputed father of science-fiction illustration. He created the “look” of Science Fiction for the first generation of S-F fans via his many cover for the pulp magazines published by the entrepreneur Hugo Gernsback in the late 1920's and early 1930's. His fertile imagination amply demonstrated by the paintings and drawings in this book speak for themselves and his legacy continues to influence the field today.

He designed the cover and the logo for the first issue of Amazing Stories in 1926 and went on to paint 38 more covers for Amazing Stories and 200 other covers for Air Wonder Stories, Science Wonder Stories, Wonder Stories Planet Stories, Superworld Comics, Science Fiction, Science Fiction Plus and the first issue of Marvel Comics. His most famous Amazing Stories cover is probably that from August 1927, illustrating a reprint of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. This is a thrilling collection of art by the man who was at the forefront of the genre. Essays by Korshak, Arthur C. Clark and others.

The cover to this edition is a reproduction from Amazing Stories, the world's first Science fiction magazine and depicts an immortal scene from the H.G. Wells classic War of the Worlds. 128 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (229mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9780980093117)

The Bumper Book of Look and Learn
Edited by Stephen Pickles. Century, 2007. A beautifully packaged annual featuring the best of the old favourite, Look and Learn, fondly remembered by thousands as the children's classic magazine from the 60s and 70s. But history was its chief concern, and its brilliant illustrators filled its pages with beautiful pictures of the past.

This lavishly illustrated tribute to the magazine presents a kaleidoscopic journey through time, whose narrative pauses for occasional episodes from the cult story of The Trigan Empire.

Packed with superb illustrations by some of the greatest illustrators of their time, including wonderful illustrations by Frank Bellamy, Ron Embleton. Cecil Doughty, Peter Jackson, and many more. Eerie Archives Volume Two

Eerie Archives Volume Two
Shawna Gore Editor. Dark Horse Books, 2009. When publisher Jim Warren created Creepy magazine in 1962, he soon realized he'd hit pay dirt on a gruesome gold mine of great comics storytelling. Under the leadership of editor/writer Archie Goodwin, Warren's hit line of horror-comics magazines grew another lurid limb with the introduction of Eerie in 1964, and soon there were two great horror magazines on the rack instead of one. Following in the fetid footsteps of our sinfully successful archive library of Creepy, Dark Horse is also proudly publishing its Eerie equivalent -- keeping chilling stories and incredible artwork in the family!

Includes astonishing artwork and classic stories from such comics' legends as Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Gray Morrow, Neal Adams, and Frank Frazetta!

Reprints classic Eerie stories from issues 6-10 originally published from 1966 to 1967. 240 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 8½" x 11" (215mm x 279mm) (ISBN-13: 9781595823151)

Creepy Archives Volume 4

Creepy Archives Volume 4
Shawna Gore (Editor). Dark Horse Books, 2009. Pulpy, smart, and scary, the stories in Creepy constituted some of the best short-form horror fiction ever told in comics. This volume reprints all the material in Creepy #16 through 20 and features art by Neal Adams, Johnny Craig, Steve Ditko, Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Wally Wood amongst many other notables. 240 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 8½" x 11" (215mm x 279mm) (ISBN-13: 9781595823083)

George McManus's Bringing Up Father
(Ref: GMBUF)

George McManus's Bringing Up Father
Jeffrey Lindenblatt (Editor). NBM / Forever Nuts, 2009. In 1904, a young George McManus was hired by Pulitzer's New York World as a cartoonist. While he was there he created such strips as The Newlyweds which many comics historians consider the first family comic strip. In 1912, William Randolph Hearst hired McManus away to start a comic strip about a guy called Jiggs, a lower class man who came into a lot of money. With their new wealth, Maggie, Jiggs' wife, wanted to enter the upper crust of society but Jiggs just wanted to hang out with his old friends at the local bar playing cards and pool and eat his simple favorite foods. This is the classic strip Bringing Up Father which became the second longest comic strip of the 20th Century. Now, for the first time, Forever Nuts presents all the dailies of the first two years of this classic comic strip, many of which have not been reprinted since they first appeared over 90 years ago. Discover why McManus became known as one of the greats in the field. 192 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 11½" x 8½" (291mm x 215mm) (ISBN-13: 9781561635566)

The Parrots: Edward Lear The Complete Plates
(Ref: ELTP)

The Parrots: Edward Lear The Complete Plates
Edward Lear, Prof. Francesco Solinas, Sophia Willmann, Graham Arader. Taschen, 2009.

Loose Leaf Collection of 42 Fine Art Prints with Booklet, complete in Box.

Edward Lear is best known for his nonsense verse, but in his early years he excelled as an illustrator of birds and reptiles. This set of 42 hand-colored lithographs, originally entitled Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots, was the finest achievement of his relatively brief career as a natural history draftsman, before failing eyesight led him to concentrate on his writing.

During Lear's time, live parrots were rare and much sought-after, bought and sold for large sums by wealthy amateurs of natural history, and prized by 19th century European aristocracy for their astonishing plumage and mimickry of the human voice. Fine drawings of them were also highly prized and here is one of the first collections entirely dedicated to the species, including African, Australian, and American parrots bred by eminent ornithologists such as Sir William Jardine and Prideaux John Selby.

Unlike other avian illustrators who often worked with stuffed birds, the young and prodigiously talented Lear (1812–1888) made his drawings from live parrots, capturing their expressions and movements in remarkably lifelike illustrations. The new medium of hand-colored lithography facilitated the vivid elegance of Lear's work.

This exquisite collection was originally reproduced in only 175 precious sets and sold by subscription to Britain’s most eminent scholars and wealthy collectors of living parrots. The Psittacidae established Lear as a celebrated illustrator, and professor of drawing to the young Queen Victoria.

With a brief zoological introduction and written descriptions of each bird. Loose Leaf Collection with 42 Fine Art Prints, Booklet, complete in Box. 116 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 13" x 19" (328mm x 490mm) (ISBN-13: 9783822852743)

The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics
(Ref: AOHK)

The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius of Comics
Denis Kitchen and Paul Buhle, Harvey Kurtzman (artist). Abrams, 2009. Harvey Kurtzman discovered Robert Crumb and gave Gloria Steinem her first job in publishing when he hired her as his assistant. Terry Gilliam also started at his side, met an unknown John Cleese in the process, and the genesis of Monty Python was formed. Art Spiegelman has stated on record that he owes his career to him. And he's one of Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner's favorite artists.

Harvey Kurtzman had a Midas touch for talent, but was himself an astonishingly talented and influential artist, writer, editor, and satirist. The creator of MAD and Playboy's "Little Annie Fanny" was called "One of the most important figures in postwar America" by the New York Times. Kurtzman's groundbreaking "realistic" war comics of the early 1950s and various satirical publications (MAD, Trump, Humbug, and Help!) had an immense impact on popular culture, inspiring a generation of underground cartoonists. Without Kurtzman, it's unlikely we'd have had Airplane, SNL, or National Lampoon.

This definitive volume is the first and only authorized celebration of this "Master of American Comics" and includes hundreds of never-before-seen illustrations, paintings, pencil sketches, newly discovered lost E.C. Comics layouts, color compositions, illustrated correspondence, and vintage photos from the rich Kurtzman archives. 256 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 11¼" x 10½" (285mm x 266mm) (ISBN-13: 9780810972964)

Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Book 4
(Ref: MOOMIN4)

Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Book 4
Tove Jansson. Drawn & Quarterly, May 2008. Tove Jansson is revered around the world as one of the foremost children's authors of the twentieth century for her illustrated chapter books regarding the magical worlds of her creation, the Moomins. The Moomins saw life in many forms but debuted to its biggest audience ever on the pages of world's largest newspaper the London Evening News, in 1954. The strip was syndicated in newspapers around the world with millions of readers in 40 countries. Moomin Book Four continues Drawn & Quarterly's publishing plan to reprint the entire strip drawn by Jansson before she handed over the reigns to her brother Lars in 1960. This is the first time the strip will be published in any form in North America and will deservedly place Jansson among the international cartooning greats of the last century.

The Moomins are a tight-knit family – hippo-shaped creatures with easygoing and adventurous outlooks. Jansson's art is pared down and precise, yet able to compose beautiful portraits of ambling creatures in fields of flowers or rock-strewn beaches that recall Jansson's Nordic roots. The comic strip reached out to adults with its gentle and droll sense of humor. Whimsical but with biting undertones, Jansson's observations of everyday life, including guests who overstay their welcome, modern art, movie stars, and high society, easily caught the attention of an international audience and still resonate today. The stories in this volume include Moomin Goes Wild West, Snorkmaiden Goes Rococo plus three others. 110 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 9" x 12" (220mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9781897299784)
