There are many examples of Hergé's original artwork showing how and why he created certain pieces and how the books were edited in the 1930's and 1940's when stories that had originally appeared in black and white in magazines were to be republished in colour for the 63 page album format. The book contains a biography of Tintin's creator Georges (Hergé) Remi and gives us the background in terms of his life and world events that shaped the Tintin stories. L'Ile Au Tresor
Hugo Pratt. Casterman, 1988. Fine. A fantastic opportunity to own this incredibly rare out of print adaptation by the legendary comics master Hugo Pratt. He brings all his skills to this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure tale, Treasure Island. The work has never been reprinted or translated into English. As usual Pratt gives you just the bare bones of the story and you see pages of his watercolour sketches featuring his research an all manner of nautical and piratical subjects from ensigns and rope knots to Blackbeard the Pirate and the design of Poop Decks and cannon.

This volume also includes a map of Treasure Island, a list of ships with their cargoes that were lost in the West Indies together with reproductions of the Player's cigarette cards that depicted the Royal Navy 1663-1805. Topping even this are several full-page reproductions from Howard Pyle's famous Book of Pirates.

Humbug
Harvey Kurtzman, Will Elder, Arnold Roth, Al Jaffee, Jack Davis. Fantagraphics, 2009. Harvey Kurtzman changed the face of American humour when he created the legendary MAD comic. As editor and chief writer from its inception in 1952, through its transformation into a slick magazine, until he left MAD in 1956, he influenced an entire generation of cartoonists, comedians, and filmmakers. In 1962, he co-created the long-running Little Annie Fanny with his long-time artistic partner Will Elder for Playboy, which he continued to produce until his virtual retirement in 1988.

Between MAD and Annie Fanny, Kurtzman's biographical summaries will note that he created and edited three other magazines, Trump, Humbug, and Help! Whereas his MAD and Annie Fanny are readily available in reprint form, his major satirical work in the interim period is virtually unknown. Humbug, which had poor distribution, may be the least known, but to those who treasure the rare original copies, it equals or even exceeds MAD in displaying Kurtzman's creative genius.

Humbug was unique in that it was actually published by the artists who created it: Kurtzman and his cohorts from MAD Will Elder, Jack Davis, and Al Jaffee, were joined by universally acclaimed cartoonist Arnold Roth.

With no publisher above them to rein them in, this little band of creators produced some of the most trenchant and engaging satire of American culture ever to appear on American newsstands. Reynold Brown: A Life In Pictures

William Reynold Brown (1917–1991) was a prolific American artist whose career embraced virtually every facet of the illustration field. During his life he produced work for the newspaper comics (Tailspin Tommy), invented the concept of the “cutaway” drawing for North American Aviation, painted covers for some of the first paperback books ever published, illustrated scores of magazines and magazine covers, and most notably produced over 300 movie posters for the motion picture industry.
