Ron Embleton's Wulf the Briton: The Complete Adventures (Limited Edition)
(Ref: WTB)

Ron Embleton's Wulf the Briton: The Complete Adventures (Limited Edition)

DELUXE HARDCOVER EDITION LIMITED TO 400 COPIES WORLDWIDE
*** Coming Soon ***

Ron Embleton. Book Palace Books, due late 2010. First Edition. At last … all of Ron Embleton's Wulf the Briton stories - from Express Weekly and the Annuals - in large format, gloriously reproduced in colour to the highest standard.

Wulf the Briton was without doubt Ron Embleton's comic masterpiece after he took over the strip - which was a single page cover feature on Express Weekly - in 1957.

The workload that Embleton undertook with Wulf was formidable. In comparison to Frank Hampson, who had a studio and assistants to help meet the weekly Dan Dare deadlines, Embleton just had himself to draw, letter and paint the feature. However Embleton was unfazed by such considerations and within a few months he was also writing the strip and steering it in a much more historically credible direction, as well as adding an extra page to the strip!

Deluxe hard cover NUMBERED edition limited to 400 copies worldwide. 352 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 11" x 14" (270mm x 360mm) (ISBN-13: 9781907081132)

Illustration (UK magazine), issue 24 Summer 2010
(Ref: ILLUSTRATION24)

Illustration (UK magazine), issue 24 Summer 2010
Recommended.

Edited by Ruth Prickett. Guineapiguana Publications, Summer 2010. The Euro may be struggling and governments full of doom and gloom about cut backs, but as summer arrives we aim to raise the spirits with a splash of glorious colour when we celebrate the work of Brian Wildsmith. As he passes his 80th birthday, he tells us about his award-winning ABC and why it had such a revolutionary effect on the world of children's publishing in the still austere atmosphere of the early 1960s. Of course, the British have always had a reputation for remaining steadfastly pessimistic when times are good, but unnervingly cheery when things (as they always predicted) go wrong, so we investigate this mix of cynicism and “mustn't grumble” mockery when we learn about Tate's summer exhibition, “Rude Britannia”.

We ask the curator whether there really is such a thing as a British sense of humour and, if so, what defines it. Humour was never far from the surface in the art of Edward Bawden and we learn more about what amused, intrigued and excited this polymath artist when his executor guides us through the scrapbooks he collected throughout his life. Odd juxtapositions of photos, sketches, labels, swatches and designs are carefully arranged and overlaid to create unexpected insights, baffling contrasts and flashes of laughter. These make the books both artistic gems and a fascinating glimpse into Bawden's mind and thoughts.

Then we're off to the seaside with two very different artists who have both created entire alphabets based on the sea. We examine the results and discuss the nature of illustrated alphabets and the challenges they present, and ask why both artists are sure that they are a form of illustration. Nostalgic armchair travellers can enjoy a taste of an Italian childhood when we examine the illustrative legacy of the remarkable Giornalino della Domenica or contemplate a pizza in the company of murals by Lizzie Mary Cullen for Zizzi. (ISSN: 1745-5588) 48 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8" x 12" (203mm x 305mm)

Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Book 5
(Ref: MOOMIN5)

Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Book 5
Tove Jansson. Drawn & Quarterly, 2010. Moomin Book Five: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip features the final strips drawn by Tove Jansson and written by her brother Lars for the London Evening News, before Lars took over both the art and the writing. The first "Moomin Winter" returns with more unwanted guests than in Book One, especially the curious and secret-spilling Nibling, sending the Moomin household into a tizzy of secrecy and closed doors.

In "Moomin Under Sail," the Moomins find themselves without a new adventure until Too-Ticky's compass gives them the idea to build a boat and head to sea.

Finally we meet the Fuddler's heart, and his bumbling drives her straight into the arms of Dr. Hatter, the local psychiatrist. Delightfully quirky, the Moomin family does not fare well under the gaze of someone trained in correcting odd behaviour. 88 pages. George Herriman's Krazy Kat: A Celebration of Sundays 1909 - 1944
(Ref: GHKKCOS)

George Herriman's Krazy Kat: A Celebration of Sundays 1909 - 1944

Includes an uncut set of 12 postcards.

Highly Recommended.

Edited by Patrick McDonnell & Peter Maresca. Sunday Press, July 2010. The further in years (and now a century!) that we get away from the early newspaper comics, the more they look like fine art prints. Like Hiroshige with his woodblocks, and Toulouse-Lautrec with his lithographs, these early cartoonists were masters of their craft. In this Krazy Kat collection we can truly see the beauty of Herriman's penline, the mastery of his drawing, the powerful impact of his design, and his brave use of colour.

The Sunday comic page is where the daily strip artist gets to play. Herriman used this additional space as a place to improvise and explore. The early Herriman Sundays are in black and white and are filled with intricate details, more elaborate penwork, and long, involved stories. In 1935, colour was introduced. In response, Herriman surprised us with art that became bolder, more sculptural, and with big open spaces. The blacks became heavier, the layouts more graphic, and the stories sparser (going from sonnets to haikus). Each decade of Krazy Kats has its own feeling and look, and is impressive in its own way. Collected here are, in my opinion, the best of the best.

A simply stunning collection printed at full size for the very first time since publication. A book all serious fans of comics and newspaper strips will love to have on their bookshelves. Krazy Kat, Ignatz Mouse and Officer Pupp, “pow” “zip” unrequited love and more brick hurling than you thought possible! 160 pages. Hard Cover Part Colour 14" x 17" (356mm x 432mm) (ISBN-13: 9780976888581)

The Complete Torpedo Volume 2
(Ref: TORPEDO2)

The Complete Torpedo Volume 2
Sanchez Abuli, Jordi Bernet. IDW Publishing, 2010. The continuing adventures of Luca Torelli, a cold-hearted gangster in the 1930s, and those in his merciless orbit. Abuli portrays the characters with humor and poignancy, and Jimmy Palmiotti's translations provide a true sense of New York in the 1930s. Jordi Bernet's art, of course, is lovely, but Torpedo is Bernet's masterpiece - the closest the graphic novel medium has ever come to The Godfather. 144 pages. Crikey! #15
(Ref: CRIKEY15)

Crikey! #15
Edited by Glen B Fleming and Tony Ingram. Sequential Media Publications, 2010. Issue 15 of Crikey! is dominated by two people who have recently passed away but left an indelible mark on the British Comics scene. Peter O'Donnell had a writing career spanning over 65 years and is of course most famous for Modesty Blaise. John Hicklenton meanwhile had been a mainstay of 2000AD with his fan favourite work on Judge Dredd and Nemesis. Pat Mills takes a look at the career of the artist who died just 42 years of age.

On a more upbeat front there is an interview with cartoonist Peter Maddock's and a history of Captain Hurricane. Martin Jones takes a look at Darkies Mob and Tony Ingram continues his look at the 1980s revival of The Eagle. 52 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8" x 12" (203mm x 305mm)

Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune Volume 1 1933 – 1935
(Ref: CESOF1)

Captain Easy, Soldier of Fortune Volume 1 1933 – 1935
Roy Crane. Fantagraphics Books, 2010. Roy Crane is one of America's greatest cartoonists and here is his gorgeous adventure strip Captain Easy. Crane created the first American adventure strip — even before Hal Foster's Tarzan and Prince Valiant, before Milton Caniff's Terry and the Pirates, before Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon — and quickly established himself as a master of the comic strip. Begun in 1924 under the eponymous title Wash Tubbs, within four months it moved from a gag-a-day strip about a girl-crazy young grocery store clerk to an adventure strip when Wash Tubbs embarks on a treasure hunt. Captain Easy was introduced in 1929 and began starring in his own Sunday page in 1933, which begins our first volume of Captain Easy.

The first of six volumes contains the earliest Sunday pages from 1933 to 1935. In his first adventure, Captain Easy visits a lost city, battles pirates, dons a deep-sea diving suit to explore a sunken ruin in search of treasure, and everywhere he goes, he finds beautiful women — a lost princess, a pirate queen, a savage woman in need of “taming.” A romantic adventurer from a less politically correct age, Captain Easy is a Soldier of Fortune whose bravery and daring are exceeded only by his Southern gallantry.

Crane created the template for the adventure strip, combining adventure and humor in a Bigfoot cartooning style that perfectly conveyed the tongue-in-cheek tone and light-hearted thrills that kept readers on the edge of their seats.

Crane's Captain Easy influenced virtually every cartoonist who followed him — from Chester Gould (Dick Tracy) to Milton Caniff (Terry and the Pirates) — and even Hollywood's adventure movies starring the likes of Cary Grant or Errol Flynn adopted Crane's tone of two-fisted, good-natured derring-do. Citing Crane's influence on comics, the artist Gil Kane once said, “Superman was Captain Easy; Batman was Captain Easy.” The first volume of Captain Easy also features a selection of Crane's original color guides, a biographical and critical introduction to Crane and his work by comics scholar Jeet Heer illustrated with rare Crane art, a preface by series editor Rick Norwood, and a foreword written by Charles M. Schulz for the 1974 Luna Press Wash Tubbs collection. 144 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 11" x 15" (270mm x 380mm) (ISBN-13: 9781606991619)

Blazing Combat
(Ref: BLAZCOMBATSC)

Blazing Combat
Archie Goodwin author/editor, Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood, Alex Toth et al art. Fantagraphics Books, 2009. For the first time ever, the Legendary anti-war comic collected in its entirety. Written by Archie Goodwin and drawn by such luminaries as Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood, John Severin, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Gene Colan, Blazing Combat was originally published by independent comics publisher James Warren in 1965 and '66. Following in the tradition of Harvey Kurtzman's Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat, Goodwin's stories reflected the human realities and personal costs of war rather than exploiting the clichés of the traditional men's adventure genre. They were among the best comics stories about war ever published.

Blazing Combat ended after its fourth issue when military post exchanges refused to sell the title due to their perception that it was an anti-war comic. Their hostility was fueled by the depiction of the then-current Vietnam War, especially a story entitled “Landscape,” which follows the thoughts of a simple Vietnamese peasant rice-farmer who pays the ultimate price simply for living where he does — and which was considered anti-war agitprop by the more hawkish members of the business community.

Writer Archie Goodwin and the original publisher James Warren discuss the death of Blazing Combat and market censorship as well as the creative gestation of the series in exclusive interviews. 208 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 8" x 10" (203mm x 254mm) (ISBN-13: 9781606993668)

Rip Kirby The First Modern Detective Complete Comic Strips 1948-1951
(Ref: RKTFMD2)

Rip Kirby The First Modern Detective Complete Comic Strips 1948-1951
Alex Raymond, introduction by Howard Chaykin. IDW Publishing, 2010. While investigating crimes on both sides of the Atlantic, the urbane detective encounters beautiful and conniving women, menacing men, jewel thieves, pickpockets, ex-Nazis, rich debutantes, spoiled heirs, kleptomaniac mothers, small town gossips, a fake Yogi named "The Great You," his recurring nemesis - the Mangler - and more than a murder or two.

It Was The War Of The Trenches
(Ref: IWTWOTT)

It Was The War Of The Trenches
Jacques Tardi. Fantagraphics Books, 2010. World War I, that awful, gaping wound in the history of Europe, has long been an obsession of Jacques Tardi's. (His very first —rejected— comics story dealt with the subject, as does his most recent work, the two-volume Putain de Guerre.) But It Was the War of the trenches is Tardi's defining, masterful statement on the subject, a graphic novel that can stand shoulder to shoulder with Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front and Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms.

Tardi is not interested in the national politics, the strategies, or the battles. Like Remarque, he focuses on the day to day of the grunts in the trenches, and, with icy, controlled fury and disgust, with sardonic yet deeply sympathetic narration, he brings that existence alive as no one has before or since. Yet he also delves deeply into the underlying causes of the war, the madness, the cynical political exploitation of patriotism. And in a final, heartbreaking coda, Tardi grimly itemizes the ghastly human cost of the war, and lays out the future 20th century conflicts, all of which seem to spring from this global burst of insanity.

Trenches features some of Tardi's most stunning artwork. Rendered in an inhabitually lush illustrative style, inspired both by abundant photographic documentation and classic American war comics, augmented by a sophisticated, gorgeous use of Craftint tones, Trenches is somehow simultaneously atypical and a perfect encapsulation of Tardi's mature style. It is the indisputable centerpiece of Tardi's oeuvre.

It Was the War of the Trenches has been an object of fascination for North American publishers: RAW published a chapter in the early 1980s, and Drawn and Quarterly magazine serialized a few more in the 1990s. But only a small fraction of Trenches has ever been made available to the English speaking public (in now out of print publications); the Fantagraphics edition, the third in an ongoing collection of the works of this great master, finally remedies this situation. 118 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 8" x 11" (210mm x 275mm) (ISBN-13: 9781606993538)

Highly Recommended.

Dan Zimmer, Editor. The Illustrated Press, 2010. In this special issue Dan Zimmer hosts a tribute to a long time favourite pulp artist Hugh J. Ward who is given an excellent in depth biography by the ever reliable David Saunders. Saunders has gathered the collection of H. J. Ward original art, rare photographs and mint copies of printer's proofs to illustrate this biography that contains contributions from the artist's family. Ward was known for his lurid, violent and sexy covers for a whole host of western pulps and perhaps most notoriously for several of the highly collected “Spicy” titles featuring assorted alluring damsels in distress and stages of undress. Again - a must for fans of hard-boiled pop culture.

Published quarterly and printed in full colour, each issue features the highest quality printing, photography and colour reproductions of original art available anywhere.

For those with an interest in popular culture, commercial art and design, publishing history, comic books, paperbacks, pulp magazines, or collecting original art. 96 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8" x 11" (203mm x 279mm)

Little Nemo in Slumberland - Many More Splendid Sundays (Volume 2)

Little Nemo in Slumberland - Many More Splendid Sundays (Volume 2)

Gertie the Dinosaur flip book free in every book!

Winsor McCay, edited by Peter Maresca. Sunday Press Books, 2009. Presenting 110 more great pages from all 3 incarnations of Little Nemo: 1906-1911, 1911-1914, and 1924-1927, including pages never before reprinted.

One of the most difficult things about publishing our first Little Nemo in Slumberland volume was trying to limit the selection to only 100 Sunday pages for the Centennial edition. In fact, we couldn't, so we ended up with 109 pages. One of the best things about that book's unequivocal and unanticipated success is the opportunity to restore and reprint another volume of Splendid Sundays, a volume to include some of those other wonderful pages.

The newspaper pages presented here include two incredible adventures from the first Little Nemo series (1905 - 1911) and a sampler of the best Sunday pages from the other two incarnations of Winsor McCay's timeless classic. In the Land of Wonderful Dreams was published from 1911 - 1914 and Little Nemo in Slumberland ran again from 1924 - 1927. The total series spans over twenty years and contains nearly 500 pages. Once again, we had to choose: this time we selected 120 Sundays.

When dealing with a collection of material this old, there are always wide variations among pages in the printing inks, color separation, and paper quality. These differences become magnified because of the time span of the work, different newspapers, and changing print processes. Restoration is a complex effort as we strive for continuity and a common appearance of these strips through the years.

As with previous Sunday Press titles, our goal is to recreate the experience of reading the Sunday comic pages as they originally appeared a century ago. Most of the natural flaws that appeared in the original form, such as off-register colors, ink smudges and paper imperfections, can still be seen. Those imperfections that have come about through time or neglect: stains, tears, and excessive yellowing have been digitally repaired. The paper for this book is uncoated woodfree, selected to duplicate the way colors appeared on newsprint, but without newsprint's ephemeral characteristics.

The result is another opportunity to enjoy Little Nemo in Slumberland as it was intended to be seen. 128 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 16" x 21" (41cm x 53cm) ISBN: 0976888556

El Borak and other Desert Adventures
(Ref: ELBORAK)

El Borak and other Desert Adventures
Robert E Howard, illustrated by Tim Bradstreet and Jim & Ruth Keegan. Del Rey, 2010. Robert E. Howard is famous for creating such immortal heroes as Conan the Cimmerian, Solomon Kane, and Bran Mak Morn. Less well-known but equally extraordinary are his non-fantasy adventure stories set in the Middle East and featuring such two-fisted heroes as Francis Xavier Gordon - known as “El Borak” - Kirby O'Donnell, and Steve Clarney. This trio of hard-fighting Americans, civilized men with more than a touch of the primordial in their veins, marked a new direction for Howard's writing, and new territory for his genius to conquer.

The wily Texan El Borak, a hardened fighter who stalks the sandscapes of Afghanistan like a vengeful wolf, is rivaled among Howard's creations only by Conan himself. In such classic tales as “The Daughter of Erlik Khan,” “Three-Bladed Doom,” and “Sons of the Hawk,” Howard proves himself once again a master of action, and with plenty of eerie atmosphere his plotting becomes tighter and twistier than ever, resulting in stories worthy of comparison to Jack London and Rudyard Kipling.

Every fan of Robert E. Howard and aficionados of great adventure writing will want to own this rugged collection of the best of Howard's desert tales, lavishly illustrated by award-winning artists Tim Bradstreet and Jim & Ruth Keegan. 592 pages. The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 2
(Ref: AOHIOT2)

The Art of Herge Inventor of Tintin 1907 – 1939 volume 2
Philippe Goddin, Hergé. Last Gasp, 2009. The second in a three-volume series, this is a selection of Herge's outstanding and often unpublished drawings, showing the diversity of his work and offering the reader a view of the range of his talent. Georges Remi, better known as Herge, the creator of Tintin & Snowy, was born a century ago. He left an exceptional legacy, the center of which was Tintin, but also included much other work.

This second volume of The Art of Herge covers the years 1937 to 1945. The period illustrated is fascinating on a number of counts, marking the maturity of Herge, the creator and artist. In 1937 Herge was only 30, but he had already laid down enough markers to lay claim to his future territory -- the strip cartoon. It was during this period that he began to render the Adventures of Tintin in color. The period covered in this volume was also marked by global political tensions and mounting dangers that boiled over into the Second World War.

From his childhood onward, Herge produced a vast number of drawings. The Art of Herge, Inventor of Tintin presents them all in chronological order, with many high quality reproductions, each accompanied by concise commentary allowing us a closer look into Herge's daily routine, and by extension, his thoughts. 208 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 9" x 12" (225mm x 305mm) (ISBN-13: 9780867197242)

West Coast Blues
(Ref: WCB)

West Coast Blues
Jacques Tardi. Fantagraphics, 2009. A savage Noir thriller --- George Gerfaut, aimless young executive and desultory family man, witnesses a murder and finds himself sucked into a spiral of violence involving an exiled war criminal and two hired assassins. Adapting to the exigencies of his new life on the run with shocking ease, Gerfaut abandons his comfortable middle-class life for several months (including a sojourn in the countryside after an attempt to ride the rails turns spectacularly bad) until, joined with a new ally, he finally returns to settle all accounts... with brutal, bloody interest.

Originally released in 2005, West Coast Blues (Le Petit bleu de la côte ouest) is Tardi's adaptation of a popular 1976 novel by the French crime writer Jean-Patrick Manchette. (The novel had been previously adapted to film under the more literal title Trois hommes à abattre, and was released in English by the San Francisco-based publisher City Lights under the English version of the same title, 3 to Kill.)

Tardi's late-period, looser style infuses Manchette's dark story with a seething, malevolent energy; he doesn't shy away from the frequently grisly goings-on, while maintaining (particularly in the old-married-couple-style bickering of the two killers who are tracking Gerfaut) the mordant wit that characterizes his best work. This is the kind of graphic novel that Quentin Tarantino would love, and a double shot of Scotch for any fan of unrelenting, uncompromising crime fiction. 80 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 7" x 11" (190mm x 270mm) (ISBN-13: 9781606992951)

P. Lovecraft said, 'Few readers will ever forget the hideous and compelling power of this macabre masterpiece'); a historical poem relating a momentous battle between Cimbri and the legions of Rome; and 'Sharp's Gun Serenade', one of the last and funniest of the Breckinridge Elkins tales.

Rip Kirby The First Modern Detective Complete Comic Strips 1946-1948
(Ref: RKTFMD1)

Rip Kirby The First Modern Detective Complete Comic Strips 1946-1948
Alex Raymond. IDW Publishing, 2009. The first in IDW’s new series reprinting 30 months of daily continuity in their gorgeously presented Library of American Comics. Created by Alex Raymond when he was deactivated from the Marines after World War II, Rip Kirby was a fresh approach to the genre, a departure from the prevailing hard-boiled style of detective fiction. Rip Kirby was urbane and cerebral, and used scientific methods as often as he used his fists when solving crimes and mysteries.

Edited and designed by Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney, the strips are reproduced from pristine syndicate proofs that will allow readers to see, for the first time, the luxurious detail of Raymond's brushwork. Includes a biographical and historic essay by Brian Walker, and an introduction by Raymond biographer and authority Tom Roberts.

An ideal companion to Tom Roberts’ recent biography Alex Raymond: His Life and Art. 320 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 11" x 10" (290mm x 265mm) (ISBN-13: 9781600104848)

The Chronicles Of Conan volume 18 Isle of the Dead and other stories
(Ref: TCOC18)

The Chronicles Of Conan volume 18 Isle of the Dead and other stories
Bruce Jones, John Buscema, Marc Silvestri and others. Dark Horse Comics, 2009. Taking over writing duties on Conan the Barbarian in the early 1980s, Bruce Jones brought his humor and horror sensibilities -- as well as his knack for telling great short stories -- to the title, invigorating John Buscema, who returned to work on the series with Conan #136. In this volume, these two comic-book titans lead Conan on a thrilling tour of Hyboria -- from the monster-infested Bossonian Marshes to the hideous slave markets of Belthem -- as Conan encounters strange, supernatural foes, beguiling women, and overconfident rulers.

Stories like 'The River of Death', 'Titan's Gambit', and the two-part 'Spider Isle' adventure are meticulously restored and recolored, and Jones and Buscema are joined by such talents as Ernie Chan, Mark Silvestri, Val Mayerik, Alfredo Alcala, and others.

This volume collects Conan the Barbarian issues #135 to #142, including all original series covers. 204 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 7" x 10" (170mm x 255mm) (ISBN-13: 9781595823823)

Eerie Archives Volume Two
(Ref: EERIEA2)

Eerie Archives Volume Two
Shawna Gore Editor. Dark Horse Books, 2009. When publisher Jim Warren created Creepy magazine in 1962, he soon realized he'd hit pay dirt on a gruesome gold mine of great comics storytelling. Under the leadership of editor/writer Archie Goodwin, Warren's hit line of horror-comics magazines grew another lurid limb with the introduction of Eerie in 1964, and soon there were two great horror magazines on the rack instead of one. Following in the fetid footsteps of our sinfully successful archive library of Creepy, Dark Horse is also proudly publishing its Eerie equivalent -- keeping chilling stories and incredible artwork in the family!

Includes astonishing artwork and classic stories from such comics' legends as Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Gray Morrow, Neal Adams, and Frank Frazetta!

Reprints classic Eerie stories from issues 6-10 originally published from 1966 to 1967. 240 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 8½" x 11" (215mm x 279mm) (ISBN-13: 9781595823151)

More Warren Archives series, including Eerie, Creepy and Blazing Combat.

The Incal 2
(Ref: INCAL2)

The Incal 2
Jodorowsky & Moebius. Titan Books, 1988. Fair. UK badged edition of the Epic Comics series that brought Moebius an increased fan base in the USA. Jodorowsky weaves a complex Science Fiction story that starts with a small seemingly insignificant event and unfolds to become a tale of Epic (ahem) proportions.

Moebius' work is beautifully detailed yet showing his strong sense of design. A rollicking adventure and then some. Contains volumes three and four of the original French series.

A good reading copy of this long out of print edition. Some scuffing to covers and marked spine stress. Insides clean and supple, a better copy than it looks. 96 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8½" x 11" (215mm x 279mm) ISBN: 185286107X

Our Price: £15.00 ($22.50) (€16,50)
