Illustration, issue 15 Spring 2008
(Ref: ILLUSTRATION15)

Illustration, issue 15 Spring 2008
Edited by Ruth Prickett. Guineapiguana Publications, Spring 2008. At a time when the business pages are filled with stories about doom and gloom on the financial markets and the plight of banks dealing with the “credit crunch”, we go shopping. Eric Ravilious's gorgeous and iconic High Street is now too expensive for most of us to buy – at least while the banks clamp down on lending – but it takes us back to a time when shops could be small, individual and full of exotic and wonderful wares.

Ravilious's gorgeous autolithographs bring out both the reality and the fantasy of these miniature retail emporiums and remind us that window shopping is a pleasure that can never be replaced by a click with a mouse. Production and display are also the themes of many of the pictographs in the codexes produced by the Maya in Central America. Their scribes recorded essentials from astronomy and religion to bee-keeping, weaving and agricultural practices – real and spiritual life inseparably entwined.

Fantasy and reality collide in a very different way in Winsor McKay's Dream of the Rarebit Fiend cartoon strip. While the subject is obviously fantastic, much of the material was based on contemporary US life and often draws on McCay's own personal experiences. A few decades later, on the other side of the Atlantic, Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird) took the grim reality of war, fifth columnists and fear of the blitz and used gentle humour and a sense of the absurd to persuade people to behave well in a world gone mad. His simple designs have become classics, but this simplicity has perhaps allowed posterity to underestimate their sophistication. We redress this balance and look at the thought behind the well-known images.

The illustrations of Wayne Anderson are clearly fantasy, but are made possible by a real work ethic and “obsessive” attitude. Fantasy makes reality palatable: we offer this issue as an antidote to economic woes. 50 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8" x 12" (203mm x 305mm) Recommended.

Illustration magazine issue number twenty two
Dan Zimmer, Editor. The Illustrated Press, 2008. Another eagerly awaited issue of this stunning magazine. This issue features Frederick Blakeslee (1898 – 1973), an appreciation by David Saunders. In fact it's just the use of the characters name to draw readers into the story.

The story is well illustrated in a modern version of the famous clear line style. 48 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8" x 11" (203mm x 279mm) (ISBN-13: 9781905460397)

Acme Novelty Library #18
(Ref: ANL18)

Acme Novelty Library #18
Chris Ware. Drawn & Quarterly, 2007. In keeping with his athletic goal of issuing a volume of his occasionally lauded ACME series once every new autumn, volume 18 finds cartoonist Chris Ware abandoning the engaging serialization of his "Rusty Brown" and instead focusing upon his ongoing and more experimentally grim narrative, "Building Stories."

Collecting pages unseen except in obscure alternative weekly periodicals and sophisticated expensive coffee table magazines, The ACME Novelty Library #18 re-introduces the characters which New York Times readers found "dry" and "deeply depressing" when one chapter of the work (not included here) was presented in its pages during 2005 and 2006.

Set in a Chicago apartment building more or less in the year 2000, the stories move from the straightforward to the mnemonically complex, invading character's memories and personal ambitions with a text point size likely unreadable to human beings over the age of 45. Reformatted to accommodate this different material, readers will be pleased by the volume's vertical shape and tasteful design, which, unlike Ware's earlier volumes, should discreetly blend into any stack or shelf of real books. 56 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 8½" x 10½" (215mm x 266mm) (ISBN-13: 9781897299173)

The Original Art of Basil Wolverton
(Ref: OAOBW)

The Original Art of Basil Wolverton
Glenn Bray. Last Gasp Publishing and Grand Central Press, 2007. The hilarious spaghetti-and-meatball style caricature art of Basil Wolverton has been a huge influence on art luminaries such as Robert Crumb, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Robert Williams, Drew Freidman, and others. This is the first time that the work of one of comicdom's major legacies has been presented in a fine art tome.

Born in Oregon in 1909, Wolverton pitched his first comic strip to a syndicate at the age of 16, but it wasn't until 13 years later that he would sell his first comic features to the new medium of comic books.

"Disk-Eyes the Detective" and "Spacehawks" were published in 1938 in Circus Comics. In 1940, "Spacehawk" (a different and improved feature) made its debut in Target Comics. The series ran for 30 episodes (262 pages), until 1942. "Powerhouse Pepper," Wolverton's most successful humor comic book feature was published in Timely, Marvel and Humorama comics from 1942 through 1952. Wolverton penned many other features, producing a total of some 1,300 comic book pages. In 1946 he earned first prize for his rendition of Lower Slobbovia's ugliest woman, Lena the Hyena. The contest, part of Al Capp's "Li'l Abner" newspaper strip, was judged by no less than Boris Karloff, Frank Sinatra, and Salvador Dali. It won Wolverton fame and notoriety, and moved his career into the mainstream spotlight for a few years, with features and caricatures appearing in Life and Pageant magazines.

In his later years Wolverton produced a story of the Old Testament, which included more than 500 illustrations, and created a series of apocalyptic illustrations based on the New Testament's "Book of Revelation." During this time he continued to create outrageous cartoons for clients as diverse as Plop, Playboy and the Topps Company. Wolverton died in 1978. 272 pages. Hard Cover Part Colour 9½" x 12½" (241mm x 317mm) (ISBN-13: 9780867196870)

The Last Musketeer
(Ref: LM)

The Last Musketeer
Jason. Fantagraphics Books, 2007. After his existential thriller (Why Are You Doing This?), his Parisian famous-writers crime caper (The Left Bank Gang), and his time-travel story (I Killed Adolf Hitler), Jason's fourth full-colour album may feature his loopiest premise yet. Set in the present time, The Last Musketeer stars the by-now centuries old musketeer Athos, who has been reduced to a suavely dressed but useless near-panhandler trading on his now almost extinct fame.

All this changes when one day the Martians attack Earth. Suddenly there is a need for swashes to be buckled, and Athos leaps back into the fray with a vengeance. The Last Musketeer is a vintage sci-fi adventure with a unique twist from an internationally acclaimed cartoonist. 48 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 7" x 9" (178mm x 229mm) (ISBN-13: 9781560978893)

Mélange
Dean Yeagle. Akileos, 2007. Acclaimed artist Dean Yeagle has somehow managed to gain plaudits for both his Disney and his Playboy work. That seems like quite a stretch, but rather obvious when you see this great new collection of his work. For this volume he has selected many of his favourite images from across the whole spectrum of his work, children's stories to cheesecake, character designs and model sheets as well as pin-ups and saucy gags. This monograph shows a fresh playful update on a classic pin-up and animation style shown off to best advantage in a classy well-designed volume. 128 pages. Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge Adventures: The Barks / Rosa Collection volume 2
(Ref: WDUS2)

Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge Adventures: The Barks / Rosa Collection volume 2
Carl Barks & Don Rosa. Gemstone Publishing, 2008. A gloriously simple and effective idea. Take a classic Carl Barks story that many would like to see reprinted: Donald Duck's Atom Bomb from 1947 and follow it with a modern Don Rosa homage to the Good Duck Man (and David Bowie / Nic Roeg) - The Duck Who Fell To Earth from 1993 - that follows up on the premise of the original inspiration.

There are two other Barks originals and Rosa homage to round out the issue. Would that more modern comics art showed as much respect, intelligence, clarity and subtle wit as Don Rosa's. 68 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 7" x 10" (178mm x 254mm) Highly Recommended.
