Dan Zimmer (Editor). The Illustrated Press, 2011. Already sold out from the publisher, this new edition of Illustration features an in-depth look at Tom Lovell, a master of dynamic pulp art possibly best known for his Western themes. In the 1940s Lovell concentrated on magazine illustration employing a much more detailed and romantic style that is a pleasure to look at.

The second feature is a piece on the Sicilian-American Nino Carbé who created wonderful illustrations for a 1932 edition of Frankenstein and later created many vivid illustrations for children's books. There is also a fond remembrance of the work of the recently departed Jeffrey Catherine Jones.

The issue is rounded out with reviews of some particularly impressive recent art books, modesty forbids etc.

Dan Zimmer (Editor). The Illustrated Press, 2010. In this special issue Dan Zimmer hosts a tribute to a long time favourite pulp artist Hugh J. Ward who is given an excellent in depth biography by the ever reliable David Saunders. Saunders has gathered the collection of H. J. Ward original art, rare photographs and mint copies of printer's proofs to illustrate this biography that contains contributions from the artist's family. Ward was known for his lurid, violent and sexy covers for a whole host of western pulps and perhaps most notoriously for several of the highly collected “Spicy” titles featuring assorted alluring damsels in distress and stages of undress. Again - a must for fans of hard-boiled pop culture.
