Dan Zimmer, Editor. The Illustrated Press, 2008. Another eagerly awaited issue of this stunning magazine. This issue features Frederick Blakeslee (1898 – 1973), an appreciation by David Saunders. The New Orleans funeral piece that begins the article is worth the price of admission alone. Finally we have The Story of the Merrill Company, a leader in the field of children's picture books during the 1940s and 50s. The usual news and reviews round out the issue. 96 pages. Dan Zimmer, Editor. The Illustrated Press, 2010. In this special issue Dan Zimmer hosts a tribute to a long time favourite pulp artist Hugh J. Ward who is given an excellent in depth biography by the ever reliable David Saunders. Saunders has gathered the collection of H. J. Ward original art, rare photographs and mint copies of printer's proofs to illustrate this biography that contains contributions from the artist's family. Ward was known for his lurid, violent and sexy covers for a whole host of western pulps and perhaps most notoriously for several of the highly collected “Spicy” titles featuring assorted alluring damsels in distress and stages of undress. Again - a must for fans of hard-boiled pop culture.
