In 1981 three Mexican-American brothers self-published their first comic book, Love and Rockets, and “changed American cartooning forever”. Over twenty-five years later it is still being published to critical and commercial success.

Jaime Hernandez’s moving stories chronicle the lives of some of the most memorable and fully formed characters the comics form has ever seen. His female protagonists, masterfully delineated with humor, candor, and breathtaking realism, come to life within California’s Mexican-American culture and punk milieu.

In April 2006 Hernandez began serializing his work with the New York Times Magazine—all of which will be collected here in full color. The notoriously private artist has opened his archives for the first time, revealing never-before-seen sketches, childhood drawings, and unpublished work, alongside his most famous Love and Rockets material.

Ranger The National Boys' Magazine
Ranger may not have lasted as long as Lion but it was home to some memorable stories and features, including one of comics' finest creations, 'The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire' featuring the artwork of Don Lawrence.

The book's creators' index also includes an astonishing array of famous names, including Frank Hampson, Ron Embleton, John Millar Watt, Mike Hubbard, Jesus Blasco, Colin Merrett, Graham Coton, Francis Marshall, Henry Seabright, Will Nickless and Theo Page.

With stories by talents as diverse as Captain W. E. Johns and John Creasey, Ranger was able to offer boys' some of the best reading material on offer, including Richard Armstrong's Carnegie Medal-winning novel Sea Change; its photos, cutaway drawings and heavily illustrated features covered everything from duels in the sky to exploding islands, from James Bond's DB6 to the Mariner Mars expedition.

Compiled by Steve Holland and David Slinn, this comprehensive tome explores the history and background of the magazine, its contents and its lasting legacy. The book also includes an extensive index to the paper's contents, as well as title and creators' indexes.

To give readers a flavour of the contents, the book also includes the full run of the 'Famous Fighting Aces' feature by Colin Merrett as well as two complete comic strips, 'The Adventures of Macbeth' by Ruggero Giovannini and 'Moby Dick' by Franco Caprioli.

Illustrated British Classics: King Solomon's Mines + Allan Quatermain + Montezuma's Daughter

Three collected British comic strips that boast the talents of Jesus Blasco, Mike Hubbard, Cecil Doughty, Bill Baker and John Millar Watt !! The strips are reproduced from the original artboards and have never looked better.

Gathered together are three classic adaptations behind a Millar Watt cover: King Solomon's Mines, Allan Quatermain and Montezuma's Daughter, each written by H Rider Haggard, the father of the lost-world genre.

King Solomon's Mines is one of the most famous of all adventure novels: adventurer Allan Quatermain is asked to help find his friend's brother who is presumed lost deep in the unexplored interior of Africa whilst looking for the legendary King Solomon's Mines. The artwork is some of Bill Baker's best and one wonders why the equally talented C. L. Doughty took over part-way through.

Allan Quatermain: in mourning for his only son, Quatermain persuades his friends (jncluding Zulu chief Umslopogas) to accompany him into Maasai territory. Travelling by canoe, they find themselves in the kingdom of Zu-Vendis, a country ruled by an isolated warlike white race … The artwork in line & wash by Mike Hubbard.

Montezuma's Daughter: superbly adapted and penned by Jesus Blasco, Thomas Wingfield sets off to avenge the murder of his mother. After a brush with the Spanish Inquisition, shipwreck and slavery, his search leads him to the shores of Mexico where he is captured by the Aztecs. He is taken to the emperor who will decide hios fate. Then the Spaniards arrive …

(Ref: ILLUSTRATION34)

Illustration (UK magazine), issue 34 Winter 2012
This issue is packed full of bright and beautiful things to bring a glow to the last cold, dark days of winter (!) We start by revisiting the glamour of the posters that sold the image of Austin Reed, Simpson's of Piccadilly, Dickins & Jones and Jaeger to war-weary shoppers of the early and mid-20th century. Oozing sophistication and confidence they called out to people to join the ranks of brave men and slim, elegant women shown parading the streets in their advertisements. And it seems that illustration was much better at selling this fantasy than photographs – perhaps because it created a world that was a step further away from reality than even the most glamorous photographs.

Illustration is also the means of coping with the grimmest realities for Michel Kichka when he uses his caricatures and cartoons to take a humorous swipe at the deadliest of world events. Whether he is turning his pen to depict Syria's President Assad or North Korea's military ambitions, or whether he is lampooning Lady Gaga, he demonstrates how a humorous visual image can make serious political points as well as raising a smile.

Korky Paul, on the other hand, has made his name taking the fantastic world of Valerie Thomas's Winnie the Witch and giving it familiarity. However far his images stray towards the surreal world of cartoons, Winnie is rooted by familiar, every day things such as kettles and computers and this “normal” element of her life has helped people to relate to her across the world. It is this power of illustration to sell goods and dreams, raise laughter or tears and speak to people in different cultures that makes it a delight to collectors – as Simon Cooke tells us when he shows us his remarkable collection.

Setting the Standard: Comics by Alex Toth 1952-1954

OUR PRICE: £12.99 List Price: £29.99 SAVE £17.00

Alex Toth's influence on the art of comic books is incalculable. As his generation was the first to grow up with the new 10-cent full-color pamphlets, he came to the medium with a fresh eye and enough talent and discipline to graphically strip it down its to its bare essentials. His efforts reached fruition at Standard Comics, creating an entire school of imitators and establishing Toth as the “comic book artist's artist.” Setting the Standard collects the entirety of this highly influential body of work in one substantial volume.

Toth began his professional career at fifteen in 1945 for Heroic Comics, but quickly advanced to superhero work for DC. Responding to the endless criticism of editor Sheldon Mayer and production chief Sol Harrison, the young artist strove toward a technique free of “showoff surface tricks, clutter, and distracting picture elements.” Simply put, he learned “how to tell a story, to the exclusion of all else.”

After falling out with DC in 1952, Toth moved west. He freelanced almost exclusively for Standard over the next two years, contributing classic work for its crime, horror, science fiction, and war titles. But perhaps most revelatory to the reader will be the romance collaborations with writer Kim Ammodt, Toth's personal favorites. “I came to prefer them for the quieter, more credible, natural human equations they dealt with — emotions, subtleties of gesture, expression, attitude.”

To explain his take on comics, Toth would quote such proverbs as “To add to truth distracts from it,” or “The beauty of the simple thing.” He employed these axioms “to make clear how universal this pursuit of truth, clarity, simplicity, economy, in all the arts and many other disciplines really is — and has been for 6,000 years.” These and other observations regarding the comic book form are collected in an essay based on Toth's published and unpublished letters and interviews.

Every page is restored to bring Toth's unsurpassed graphics and page designs into full clarity, making this an essential edition for anyone with an appreciation of the art of graphic storytelling.

Action! Mystery! Thrills!

OUR PRICE: £9.99 List Price: £19.99 SAVE £10.00

When we contemplate a memorable old comic book, the first thing that comes to mind is its cover, and that was no accident. Publishers realized fairly quickly that if they spent a little extra to hire a good cover artist, they could fill the insides with mediocrity and still make a sizable profit — that all it took was a striking cover to entice thousands of kids to fork over their dimes.

Even today, covers drive the collectors’ market. Apart from number-one issues and first appearances, the strength of a comic book’s cover is the first consideration in determining its value. Indeed, it is now common practice to entomb the book between slabs of sealed plastic — with only the cover visible — as if the interior pages’ sole purpose was to provide a place to secure the staples.

In order to locate the best possible examples, collectors from around the world have been enlisted to share their rare and valuable comic books. The scores of cover artists represented include Carl Barks, Charles Biro, Dick Briefer, L.B. Cole, Jack Cole, Reed Crandall, Will Eisner, Bill Everett, Lou Fine, Walt Kelly, Jack Kirby, Mac Raboy, and Alex Schomburg. Every comic book genre will be explored, from superhero to detective to Western to funny animal.

Majestic, iconic, chaotic, or downright weird, a classic comic book cover has an undeniable appeal, and Action! Mystery! Thrills! celebrates in spades this unique cultural icon. The covers are printed full-sized on glossy paper to most faithfully replicate the originals, and arranged chronologically to give the reader a sense of the sweeping trends and stylistic developments throughout the medium’s first decade, as inexorable waves of dazzling imagery battled monthly for newsstand attention. This long-overdue collection also includes extensive historical commentary by editor/designer Greg Sadowski (Four Color Fear, Supermen!).

OUR PRICE: £9.99 List Price: £17.99 SAVE £8.00

Fletcher Hanks was the first great comic book auteur. That is, he wrote, penciled, inked, and lettered all of his own stories. He completed an astonishing 48 stories in three years from 1939-1941. As a one-man-cartooning-band, his work packs the wallop of a unique and unified artistic vision and he was a true comics visionary.

In the earliest days of the comic book, before censorship, it was “anything goes!” — and in the tales of Fletcher Hanks, anything went. The superhero Stardust gazes down at evil-doers from space and doles out ice cold slabs of poetic justice with his wizardry. A villain out to kidnap all the heads of state gets turned into a giant head, himself… no body, just a head! The jungle protectress, Fantomah, looks like Jean Harlow in a skin-tight black negligee. But when she sees an evil scientist drugging gorillas to become slaves, her head transforms into a flaming skull and she tosses the villain to the gorillas who proceed to graphically tear the guy limb from ragged limb.

Although the early comic books were meant for the kiddies, today’s mature readers are stunned by their pop surrealism and outright violent mayhem. The first volume of Fletcher Hanks stories, I Shall Destroy All Civilized Planets! (in multiple printings) was an Eisner Award-winning smash hit and a staple on “Best of the Year” lists.

Comics fans were thrilled to come upon a cartoonist of this caliber whom they had never heard of before. Non-comics fans who read about the book in The Believer and other journals were stunned to discover an Outsider Artist in comic book form. Edited by cartoonist Paul Karasik (who also provides an insightful introduction), this second volume, You Shall Die By Your Own Evil Creation!, collects all of the rest of Hanks's comic book work. That’s right... ALL! The 31 tales in this book (more than TWICE as many as in the first), when combined with the first volume, comprise The Complete Fletcher Hanks!

OUR PRICE: £12.99 List Price: £29.99 SAVE £17.00

The 1939 creation of the Sub-Mariner for the first issue of Marvel Comics assures Bill Everett a place in history. Co-creating Daredevil, the Man Without Fear, for Marvel Comics in 1964 gave Everett a link to one of the most popular superheroes of the past 50 years. And producing over 400 additional pages of superhero-related work in the very early days of the Golden Age of Comics (1938-42) makes Bill Everett a legend.

This book collects over 200 pages of this never-before-reprinted work from titles such as Amazing Mystery Funnies (1938), Amazing-Man Comics (1939),Target Comics (1940), Heroic Comics (1940), and Blue Bolt Comics (1940). These titles feature an endless array of great vintage Everett characters such as Amazing-Man, Hydroman, Skyrocket Steele, Sub-Zero, The Chameleon, and many more, all produced by Everett’s shop Funnies, Inc. for such clients as Centaur, Novelty Press, and Eastern Color, and all displaying Everett’s brilliant cartooning and energetic storytelling.

Edited and compiled by best-selling author and comic-book historian Blake Bell, Amazing Mysteries: The Bill Everett Archives is a stunning companion to Bell’s 2010 critically acclaimed Everett biography and art book, Fire and Water: Bill Everett, The Sub-Mariner and the Birth of Marvel Comics, boasting never-before-reprinted, beautifully restored, full-color stories from one of comic books’ greatest visionaries and most accomplished artists. Also includes an introduction by Bell that delves even deeper into Everett’s life, fiery personality, and the history of the era. The resultant package enhances Everett’s place in history as one of the first and best comic-book creators of all time.

The Heap Volume 1 (Limited Edition)

Limited Edition of 1674 copies.
On October 12, 1918, Baron Von Emmelmann, a German pilot, was shot down over Wausau Swamp in Poland. Dying from his wounds, his body slowly merged with the morass. Willing to live forever more by remembering his wealth, social position, loving wife, and newborn baby he hadn't seen yet, he swore he would return to human form someway somehow. After 20 years, he rose and encountered Skywolf. At first he seemed to be a bad guy, but he has fought the Nazis and the Japanese during WWII. He ate farm animals whole so he could breathe due to the oxygen in the animals' blood.

Now for the first time Roy Thomas presents the original muck monster collected together. Though he looks like a rip-off, the Heap was created in 1942 and featuring fantastic comic artwork by Infantino, Starr, Bolle, Peddy, Leav, Barry et al.

The Art of Denis McLoughlin (Limited Edition)

Limited edition of just 950 copies worldwide.

Written by David Ashford, one of McLoughlin's close friends, the book celebrates every aspect of the artist's career, from examples of his earliest work whilst still in uniform to his lengthy association with T.V. Boardman, for whom he produced hundreds of dust jackets for their Bloodhound crime series and their yearly best-selling Buffalo Bill Annual.

The Boardman covers are almost unique in British publishing history as no major publisher relied on a single artist to produce so many of their jackets. But tracking down useable examples has proved to be a long and gruelling process. As Peter says: "We needed high quality scans of all the covers we sought and the logistics of having to carry a scanner and computer to spend a day getting under the feet of a McLoughlin devotee, which would have secured us a reasonable number of scans but by no means all the ones I craved gave us pause for thought. Photographing the books would have been quicker, but the results are light years away from a scan. It simply wasn't an option.".

Hooking up with San Francisco-based collector Mark Terry gave fresh impetus to the book as Mark already had a network of contacts with collectors through his facsimile dustjacket business; the finished book will now contain dozens of examples, carefully restored.

The book contains many examples of McLoughlin's comic strips and a biography by David Ashford, as well as behind-the-scenes photos and examples of his original artwork.

The definitive book and biography of Denis McLouglin, packed with full colour images of his art and a complete bibliography.

The book features reproductions from the surviving original artwork, "pulls" in high quality print, never-before-seen photos chronicling the artist's life and page after page of some of the most stunning artwork ever to see print in the 20th century.

Krazy & Ignatz: The Complete Sunday Strips 1935-1944 (2nd Ed.)
George Herriman. Fantagraphics Books, 2008. The second limited-edition deluxe Krazy Kat hardcover (it's Volume 3, but the second to be published; Volume 1 is still forthcoming) collects the second batch of five Krazy & Ignatz soft cover books Fantagraphics have published, comprehensively compiling the years 1935 through 1944 under hard covers. It's not a slipcase; it's a single hardcover book. The covers to the original five soft cover books are NOT included, but literally everything else is. And yes, the publisher is similarly collecting the years 1916-1924 as those soft cover volumes are completed.

Ron Embleton. Book Palace Books, 31 March 2011. First Edition. At last … all of Ron Embleton's Wulf the Briton stories - from Express Weekly and the Annuals - in large format, gloriously reproduced in colour to the highest standard.

Wulf the Briton was without doubt Ron Embleton's comic masterpiece after he took over the strip - which was a single page cover feature on Express Weekly - in 1957.

The workload that Embleton undertook with Wulf was formidable. In comparison to Frank Hampson, who had a studio and assistants to help meet the weekly Dan Dare deadlines, Embleton just had himself to draw, letter and paint the feature. However Embleton was unfazed by such considerations and within a few months he was also writing the strip and steering it in a much more historically credible direction, as well as adding an extra page to the strip!

Deluxe hard cover NUMBERED edition limited to 400 copies worldwide. 352 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 11" x 14" (270mm x 360mm) (ISBN-13: 9781907081132)

Norman Saunders

Norman Saunders (1907–1989) was the legendary illustrator of Mars Attacks, Wacky Packages, Batman, Pre-Code Comics, Men's Adventure, Paperbacks, Pulp Magazines, and Sci-Fi. His unique artistic vision influenced the visual language of American pop culture throughout a century of changing fashions, and continues to inspire today's important visionaries.

Savvy collectors have long dreamt of a book on the entire lifework of Norman Saunders, and here is the world's first book to present his finest paintings in radiant reproductions, to savour the extraordinary artistry behind so many iconic images, familiar from timeworn vintage collectibles.

The artist's son has written an insightful biography, seasoned with quotes from the artist and his associates, chronicling the frontier childhood and training of an illustrator who rose to the top of his profession, and then spent WWII in China painting travel sketches. When Saunders defied the corporate forces of conformity during McCarthyism he was relegated to underground world of subculture publishing, where he continued his remarkable career by painting countless icons for Pre-Code Comics, Men's Adventure magazines and Bubble Gum Trading Cards, until his happy rediscovery by fandom in his twilight years.

This is the consummate reference book on the entire lifework of Norman Saunders, with over 880 illustrations, of which more than 300 are from original art, including 30 working drawings, and 30 reference photos as well as 30 historic family photos, and checklists of all published works.

Robert Crumb. The Sketchbooks 1982-2011 (6 volumes) (Signed) (Limited Edition)

Limited edition of just 1,000 copies worldwide with signed colour art print.

OUR PRICE: £595.00 List Price: £650.00 SAVE £55.00

This six-book boxed set is the first collection of Robert Crumb sketches to be printed from the original art since the hard-bound, slipcased, seven volume series issued by the German publisher Zweitausendeins between 1981 and 1997.

Unlike the Zweitausendeins edition, which included every doodle ever made by the preeminent underground artist, this best-of edition has been personally edited by the notoriously picky artist to include only what he considers his finest work, including hundreds of late period drawings not published in previous sketchbook collections. Robert Crumb requested that the books representing the second half of his career be published first due to fan demand for new Crumb material (Volume 1 covers the period 1982-2011, and Volume 2 covers the period 1964-1981).

In the last 20 years Crumb's artistic output has slowed considerably, making new works more rare and highly prized.

This collection of over 600 unseen drawings created between 1996 and 2011 makes this a must-have collectible for every Crumb fan.

The slipcased set is made with loving attention to detail in a size and format selected by the artist. Each book in the boxed set contains 224 pages, for a total of 1,344 pages of prime Crumb.

The set includes a hand-written introduction, and marbleized page edges from a design created by the artist. Each set of this 1,000-copy limited edition also includes a signed color art print of a Crumb original.
