This is the original Pen & Ink Wash by Cecil Doughty.

This fine ink drawing depicts the last fight of the infamous English pirate Blackbeard (real name Edward Teach, 1680-1718) against HMS Ranger commanded by Lt. Robert Maynard (1683-1750).

The fight that followed became one of the most famous in pirate history, and only ended when Maynard personally cut down Blackbeard. Subsequently Blackbeard's head was hung from the bowsprit of HMS Ranger.

Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 562, 21st October 1972.
