This is the Signed original Watercolour painting by Cecil Doughty.

To construct a canal that would join the Mediterranean to the Red Sea was the dream of Ferdinand de Lesseps who was the French developer of the Suez Canal, which joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas in 1869, and substantially reduced sailing distances and times between the West and the East.

Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 508 (9 October 1971).
