This is the original Watercolour painting by Gerry Embleton.

This feature from Look and Learn explained how the English Crusaders came to chose the red cross on a white background as their easily identified emblem whilst the French chose a blue cross. The markers were needed as the Christian troops could speak each others language and it was a simple way to tell who's side troops fought for.
