In this issue: Norman Rockwell & Friends: The Mort Künstler Collection of American Illustrators by Michael W. Schantz, PhD. This essay is an overview of one aspect of Mort Kunstler's life not well known to his legion of admirers, namely his fantastic collection of illustration art. Artists represented include Maxfield Parrish; Edwin Austin Abbey; J.C. Leyendecker; Dean Cornwell; Harvey Dunn; Howard Pyle; N.C. Wyeth; Norman Rockwell and others.
The next feature concerns the work of Frank R. Paul (1884-1963), the father of science fiction illustration and is written by David Saunders. Paul was closely associated with Hugo Gernsback's Science-Fiction pulp magazine empire, Amazing Stories etc and as such was one of the pioneers of early modern S.F. illustration that generations of later artists learned from. The cover to this issue of Illustration Magazine reprints the very famous cover to Amazing Stories August 1928 with the first ever depiction of Buck Rogers.
Our final feature is The Waud Brothers and the Development of the Pictorial Press During the Civil War by Dennis Raverty, PhD, with Dennis Dittrich. Their battlefield drawings helped shape popular opinion about the American Civil War and the development of the illustrated newspaper in the USA.
Book reviews, exhibitions and events, and more round out the issue.
